I recently clean installed my Dell XPS 200 that was running Vista to the Win 7 RC. I love it all except there's one problem. When I let winsat rate my PC, it first would get up to Tuning Windows Media Decoding and it said video playback cannot continue . I then installed the latest Win 7 32 bit drivers from Nvidia for my 8500 GT. After restarting, my Dell said that it could not find disk 0 and asked me to go setup or try again. Turned it on, then off and it went fine. Tried winsat and it succeeded but I got a 2.0 for 3D graphics which is bs and it didn't activate Aero. I tried winsat again and now the video playback came up again. I uninstalled the driver and did a driver sweep and let the MS Update install its own driver for my card. Restart, couldn't find boot 0. Turn off, turn on and it booted fine. This apparently fixed the video playback problem for the few times I ran it after this to make sure it was gone but now I get a hard drive error. Error: Failed to properly assess the disk. The data is invalid. Then I went to Dell's website and got the Intel Chipset driver and Storage driver. Installed chipset, did nothing still can't find my hard drive after first try. Tried the sata driver and that apparently fixed my rebooting problem. But now it still doesn't go through with the winsat. I've tried running in an elevated cmd but that fails too. There are no driver conflicts in device manager. Update: Now after waiting a day my system rated my machine correctly and it got a 4.5 score. Still one problem.. Aero does't activate. I tried the troubleshooter and the regedit hacks to force aero. I have an Aero theme also. I can get Aero for a split second and then it will return to Basic. Everything else is fine, at least.

Hi, Vinnyif your aerohas suddenly flashed and then reverted to basic, its probably because of one of these reasons: -you are running an application that isnt compatible with aero, or the compatibility options are set to disable aero for an app;ication.-youve opened too many programs and run your computer out of memory. -youve changed the Performance Options to Adjust for best performance under the Advanced system properties, which disabled desktop composition. -youve disabled the Desktop Window Manager service. -your video card driver cantwork withaeroproperly.Type sysdm.cpl into the start menu search or run box, choose the "Advanced" tab and then the "Settings" button under "Performance". Make sure that at least Enable desktop composition and Enable transparent glass are selected (Or just choose "Best Appearance"), and then go back into the desktop properties and choose the "Windows Aero" theme again (although you really shouldnt have to do this step) If that still doesnt work, close out of all your open applications, and verify that the "Desktop Window Manager service" is running in "Services" under "Control Panel".If the Aero still doesen't work - try to install the lastest version of your video card driver, or wait for a new version of this driver, maybe after final W7 release Vcard manufacturer will fix this driver problem.Also as a last suggestion you can try to boot into "clean boot" http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;929135&x=19&y=12(this kb for Vista, but its same for W7) or create new user account with the Administrator rights.Hope it helps,Best regards, Sick. Hi sick_, I did a clean install to see if that would change anything. I immediately ran winsat and it posted the video playback problem. I tried it again a few minutes later and it went thorough everything but the disk assessment. I've kept trying it a few minutes to see if anything would go through but no luck. It's not #1 since I did it right after a clean install and no programs were installed. Not #2 either since I only had that running. #3- I've tried on the first Win 7 install I had and the current one and it didn't help. #4- I run the Aero troubleshooter and it tells me it's disabled and it then enables it; it goes to Aero for a split second but goes back to Basic. #5- Might be this although Windows 7 drivers are available for my build and I've tried the latest drivers and older drivers. I tried restarting the Desktop Service but it only goes to Aero for a split second before reverting back. I tried the clean boot method and no luck either. Odd thing to day though is that this morning I turned off my PC and a few hours later I boot it back up with Aero running and my winsat hasn't even been assessed properly. So, it's running for a good 5 minutes before the desktop starts flashing yet still holding Aero. Eventually it reverts back to Basic unfortunately. I haven't installed the drivers yet for this current clean install but my uncle has a copy of Win 7 and he has a 9500 GT and didn't install drivers and Aero ran fine on his machine and it was assessed properly. SO, I have no idea wtf to do. The only thing I learned from this is that I need the matrix storage driver to restart properly otherwise my pc won't find my hard drive. As far as the graphics go, I have no idea what's going on. The video playback error only happens occasionally and it's totally random and I have no idea why my hard drive can't be assessed. Any help is really appreciated.

Hi, Vinny as I can see you have a Dell laptop, maybe your problem is a common compatibility problem for this model and W7 RC (especially drivers compatibility problem, a storage controller driver problemetc.). The XPS 200 is a desktop, although it's discontinued. I only got it about 3 and a half years ago. Dell support sucks, I don't have a warranty anyway. I rather stick with the Basic theme than deal with those people. When I start up the machine though with the latest 190 series drivers, the Aero does stay longer but eventually it goes back to Basic. I'll try using older drivers that ran fine on Vista. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Update: I installed Windows 7 x64 and ran the test without drivers and got could not playback video But after installing the x64 drivers 190 series, I reran it and got a 2.0 and then reran it and got a 4.2. Great, except it didn't activate aero. I tried rerunning the Windows Desktop Service and got Aero for a few minutes before the Desktop Service crashed according to Event Viwer with the same error as the 32 bit build. The disk assessment runs fine at least. I put power to high performance and visuals to best for appearance. Any ideas on what could be going on?

I'm having an extremely similar problem. I have found that Windows Desktop Manager for one reason or another closes itself, and for this reason I can't get Aero to run whatsoever. I'm running a GTX 285 card, and I really want Aero but I just cant seem to make mine work either.

I still can't get it to work either. Hopefully new drivers come out. But are there any suggestions at all that can help the situation? I just got my RTM version and it's having the same problem.
