Administrative Shares
This goes for windows XP, Vista, and 7.: Has anyone noticed that administrative shares are enabled by default on windows NT based computers? These shares provide easy access to the c:\ drive for anyone on the network with an admin. account on the local computer. This includes the built in admin. In Windows 7, it is a bit safer anyways, because one can use password protected sharing, but still. On XP, however, this is a disaster. Lots of people used unsecured networks. Most people are not aware of the hidden admin. account on XP. Very few know of the hidden shares enabled by default. Put it all together and someone can easily breach 50%+ of consumer computers. I understand there are registry hacks to fix this. I would just like to know why. Why does there have to be a default share, and why is there no easy way to disable it?
