And I'm simply telling you that since your issue is with QuickBooks the logical first place to start is with Intuit support and/or Intuit support forums. If you have already done this, then please post back with what Intuit tech support said. Before you call them, you might want to give some thought to what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't. The Intuit tech will want to know this. Malkeleah, Thank you for your reply. It seems there was some missunderstanding as a result of your first reply. I see by your second reply that "MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!" Is some part of your greeting. There was no other text in the body of your first reply and I took Don't Panic as your reply to me. I will assume that there was more to your message that did not come through and apologize for my curt reaction to an incomplete message.I have communicated with Intuit prior to addressing my query on this site. They take no responsibility for the problem and insist that it is a microsoft issue. I have a new desktop with Vista from which I backed my quickbooks. I restored my quickbooks on my laptop running xp from the desktop (vista) backup file with no problems. After running quickbooks for a few weeks on my laptop, I backed up and attempted to restore the desktop (vista) from the laptop (xp) backup file. At this point I experienced the error message "The Current logged in windows user does not have permission to write or delete files from this location". Quickbooks technical assured be that their program should seemlessly transfer between XP and Vista and that the problem must be microsoft related. I involved a supervisor from the tech dept. who also judged the problem to be microsoft related.Ultimately I was able to backup to the laptop harddrive and then copy to a flash and successfully restored my desktop. But I still can't backup directly to my flash drive from the laptop. It may not be worth persuing further since I have found an altermate method of backing up, but if you have any insight I would appreciate your thoughts. Joe

Thank you for the clarification. Now that I know exactly what you did, I think the problem may have occurred because of permission issues and not a QuickBooks problem OR it is a QuickBooks update issue.. I'm assuming that you are using the QuickBooks Backup function from within the program itself, which is the right way to back up the QuickBooks database. While I have not experienced any problems whatsoever in transferring data files from USB key between computers running XP, Linux, Windows 7, Vista, and Mac OS X there could be a factor in your case of which I'm unaware. Perhaps you had your QuickBooks file in your XP's My Documents and you made it private. In that case, taking ownership of the USB flash drive and its contents from Vista should solve that. A. Check the permissions of the file or folder the file is saved in and take ownership: 1. Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Security tab. 3. Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you have. To open a file, you need to have read permission. For more information on permissions, see What are permissions? http://tinyurl.com/2j9vgr To take ownership of a folder: 1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab. 3. Click Edit. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 4. Click the name of the person you want to give ownership to. 5. If you want that person to be the owner of files and subfolders in this folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box. 6. Click OK Another thing that might have happened is that you updated the QuickBooks program on the XP box using Intuit's normal updater and did not do the same on the Vista machine. I assume that the actual program version on each computer is identical. An older QuickBooks will not be able to import data from in a newer QuickBooks. And when you do the little updates (not upgrading), the data gets updated too. I hope this has given you more of an additional troubleshooting path.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
