Admin User account 'lost' - cannot use system restore
We have an old desktop running XP Media. Has 6 accounts on - 1 parent admin account, 4 other named accts (non admin) and 1 guest (non admin) Somehow the system is now starting only showing 1 user account - a child's non-admin one. In computer management (admin tools) the accounts are showing but cannot be accessed. Have no idea how to access them/ the info. Cannot use system restore as only account showing is a non-admin one. Can anyone help, please? - have been googling for a few hours now :(1 person needs an answerI do too

Restart your machine in Safe Mode (press F8 while rebooting). A built-in administrator account should show. Unless you've changed the password, it probably is blank. Log in as administrator and perform your System Restore.HTH, JW

As a last resort, you can try the following procedure:"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 >Which basically restores the registry from a backup copy kept with the System Restore files. In Part 2, select a folder dated before you had this problem to copy the registry from. I personally find it easier to boot from a free Live Linux CD such as Knoppix , in which case you can start the procedure at Part 2 Step 6 using Linux copy/paste to copy files to their desired location. Live Linux CDs will not have problems with dealing with the "Super Hidden" status of the System Volume Information folder.Good Luck and HTH, JW
