Admin's Public Documents folder is gone after copying in files with long paths.
On an HP Mini 311, Windows 7 Home Premium (x32), as Admin user, 10,000+ files were copied in from a thumb drive (total file size about 1.4 GB) to folder Library > Documents > Public Documents. 50 or so got a pop-up saying file xxx has "path too long", do you want to skip file xxx? I chose Yes. After completion of the copy, Public Documents folder does not exist in Windows Explorer, only My Documents folder exists. Further, the relationship of Documents and My Documents is corrupted: they display hierarchically correct in Windows Explorer, but are considered to be the same, single directory for purposes of folder creation and file movement, e.g., a folder created in the Document directory displays in the My Documents directory, and an attempted copy from My Documents to Documents gets you a pop-up that states "No can do. It is the identical folder". Noteworthy is fact that other users properly contain and display the Public Documents folder and content! To gather information, I then created a new Admin account to see if the Public Documents folder would show correctly or incorrectly by Windows Explorer. They showed incorrectly, just as in the first Admin's account. Regarding the paths/filenames, they were really not that long, maybe a few hundred characters, but they came from a Mac, and since Macs have no constraints on filename characters such as : ? / " etc., there was a bunch of that involved. I am a Windows virgin, so I have two questions here: How can I repair this? and What else might be wrong?
