Adding an USB shared printer (win2K computer) on a laptop running windows 7
Hello. I have two small local network, one at home, and another one in my second home. Both Domain are set to "WORKGROUP". On both networks everybody connect using username and password and have restricted rights. And only one specific admin user have admin wrights. On both networks, 2 computers and one laptop run under windows 2000 until I changed my old laptop by a new one running window 7. On that new laptop, network is set as Office network (not public and not home network) At home I had no problem with my laser printer which is accessed directly on the network through a printserver. At home for adding the printer on the new laptop running window 7, I connect as administrator user, add the printer by IP adress method, disconnect, connect as normal user and be able to print. Now this is my problem : In my second home where I run into problem, the printer is USB type and is directly connected to a win2K computer. When I browse the network, I can connect to the printer (but I need to give admin username and password); This add the printer automatically, but when I disconnect and reconnect ( as admin user or normal user) the printer is allways off line and cannot be accessed. So connect again as admin user, and then I removed the printer. I try to add the printer by device name methode ( \\computername\printername ), and then get ACCESS denied. The only way I have found to add a printer is to set the network as "HOME NETWORK" (not public and not office network). The Firewall is not running on the new laptop. On the two networks (home and second home) admin user have the same username but have different password. Regards

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Temporarily disable all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on all the computers and check if it works. 2. Double-check the permission settings of the shared printer. 3. Assigned full control permissions to Spool folder under windows\system32 in the Windows 2000 computer. 4. In addition, when the issue occurs, please check if you can access other shared resources of the Windows 2000 computer. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
