Added Windows 7 to domain and now have no admin priveleges.
I have Windows 7 in a Microsoft Virtual PC session. Everything was fine until I added it to my company domain for testing. Now, I no longer have admin privileges and can't add users or change my own account to admin. Anyone know a backdoor way of logging in as administrator? I have tried to login to the local PC, but can't seem to get anything to work.

Have you contacted your domain admins if they have Domain GPOs that restrict the use of local accountson the computers joined to the domain? If so, the only thing you can do isto ask them for local admin permissions for your domain account, because by default only Domain Admins are local admins of thecomputers they log in. We do not have that restriction. If fact, I am an admin on our domain. A fact that the Windows 7 installation is apparently ignoring. I installed it and played with it locally for several days before deciding to try adding it to the domain. At that point, I changed my logon account to match my domain login, then added the virtual PC to the domain. No problems at all until I try to change anything on the PC and find I do not have admin rights. I will check with out network admin though and see if he can do anything. Thanks for the reply!

Does your domain profile have admin rights on the computer? Is your domain account a member of the Domain Admins? Are you a member of a global group that has admin rights on domain clients? If not, then your domain account will not have admin rights. Provided your GPOs dont prevent local login, you should be able to login locally by typing computername\username in the username box. From there, you can add your domain credential to the local Administrators group. If you are an admin on your domain, you should already know this. Instead of being a true domain admin, you may just have delegated rights to your OU. If you cannot logon locally, you will have to have a domain admin (a person who has an account as a member of the Domain Admins global group) fix it for you. So far from what I have tested, Windows 7 works correctly in a domain environment.

The same thing happened to me. and Yes...My account is a member of domain admin group. (global) We don't have any GPO's in place that prevent a local login. I'm just trying to set a password for the local administrator, and make sure that the domain admin group is in the local administrator's group on the PC. Everytime I try to enter User Management console, I'm prompted for a Domain user name and password. I've tried my own account with Domain Admin privleges and the Domain Admin account. It's seems to accept the passwords, but comes back with a message that I need "elevated privliges" to change a password. I've tried the local "administrator" account, which shouldn't have a password set, but it tells me the username and password is invalid. I've never had this problem with a WinXP or a W2K unit, and I've joined hundreds of them to domains.

I am having the same problem. For whatever reason, I don't have local admin rights even with the account that was created during setup???

Have you tried logging in with the local administrator account and then adding your domain account to the local administrators group? This works for me.*Note*In order to login locally you have to put your username in as such Administrator@PCName or PCName\AdministratorI hope this works for you.
