Ad Hoc (Network Sharing) issues
I have set up a network sharing ‘workgroup’ in my laptop and with my cousin’s laptop to be able to share my wired internet connection with her because at the time we were having connection issues with our router (a desperate move to give her internet access). We’ve replaced that old router with the router provided by Time Warner. Now, it seems my laptop is the only one routing. Her laptop keeps dropping internet connection whenever I turned my laptop off. We have called TW, Dell and Norton to assist in fixing the issue but no luck. I am now thinking of restoring my laptop’s factory setting. I don’t mind doing that as my laptop crashed a month ago and I just restored it to factory setting and re-installed third-party software. I thought if I eliminate the host computer it will solve the issue. Will it cause any connection issue to my cousin’s laptop if my computer restores? BTW, both computers are running on Windows Vista. Her anti-virus software is AVG while I am with Norton 360. We have Time Warner as our internet provider.

Hi If the second computer is connected Ad-Hoc to the first one (Host), you need an additional Routing for it. This can be done by configuring Vista’s ICS. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing Also, make sure that Norton and AVG are configured Not to block local traffic. P.S. This type of arrangement is Not the best solution. Having a decent Router that the two computers can connect to directly is a much better choice. .Jack, MVP-Networking. EZLAN.NET
