Active internet connection during sleep
Hi,Is it possible to have an active network connection while the computer is in sleep mode. I have noticed that vista strongly recommends people to sleep the computer when the system want to be running for long time. If such thing could be done, I think electricity will be saved more efficiently.

Hi, If the computer is in Sleep Mode, the network connections should work. What is the situation on your computer? If the network disconnects when the computer enters Sleep Mode, the driver of the network adapters may be not compatible with Windows Vista. I suggest that you upgrade the drivers to try to resolve the issue.

Hi, Have you check related setting in Device Manager? Launch devmgmt.msc in Start Search box, find the entry of the network adapter, double-click on it, and click Power Manager tab. Please make sure that the option "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" is unchecked. Also check the setting of the modem in Device Manager. Check if the network works in Sleep Mode. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi,I checked. Modem and wired network adapters don't have "power management" tab.wireless adapter on the other hand has the power management. I did two things: 1) uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and by unckeching that, the secondoption "allow this device to wake the computer" get disabled. 2) leave "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checked and also check the second option"allow this device to wake the computer". in both cases, after sleeping the computer and waking up again, I noticed that connection was lost. If we suppose the reason that "power management" tab is not present in wired adapter and modembecause drivers are not up to date, then how about wireless adapter. Don't you think it is a BIOS related problem?"I use VC++ 8.0"

Hi, The issue may be related to the BIOS. If the in the current BIOS, the ACPI is not compatible with Windows Vista, the power management behaviors would not work properly. Please try to upgrade the BIOS and check the result then. If the issue persists, please let us know the model of the motherboard. Have you upgraded the wireless adapter driver? If the issue persists after upgrading BIOS, please upgrade the network adapters' drivers and then check the result again.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Well I checked that I have latest drivers. Can you please do it with your own system? i think it is a bug in vista. "I use VC++ 8.0"

Hi, In our test machines, the network connections work properly in Sleep Mode. The possible cause is the BIOS. Please let us know the model of the motherboard and let's check if the motherboard is compatible with Windows Vista. Since you have checked the option in Device Manger and the installed driver for the network adapter, we could confirm that the issue does not occur on the network adapter. Please note the network connection status right after the computer resumes from Sleep Mode. Is the network connection icon on Notification Area has a red "X", or it indicates that the connection is only local? If no red "X" present, we should consider that the issue is related to the modem. Please let us know if it is a cable modem. Additionally, if it is convenience I recommend that you connect the computer to another network that you can connect the Internet via a router and check the result. Arthur Xie - MSFT

As I said it is a notebook (HP pavilion 2775ee). So its motherboard is not from known brands. I am not sure but I think it is related to BIOS because of notebooks power saving. Laptop BIOSes have very few options.I will test on a desktop machine. "I use VC++ 8.0"

Hi, Maybe that the behaviors when Sleep Mode is launched are changed. I suggest that you change them back to default settings. Click Start, in the Start Search box type "power options" and press Enter. One of the power plans should be selected. Click "Change Plan Settings" under the selected plan, then click "Restore default settings for this plan". The settings will be set to default. If the issue still occurs, the behavior may be controlled by programs such as Wireless Center that are specially designed for laptops by manufacturers. I suggest that you contact HP support for more information. We may also confirm if the BIOS settings are correct meantime.
