Active Directory and Windows 7/XP dual boot
Hi all, What does Active Directory use to verify the authenticity of an added windows machine ? I am asking because by installing windows 7 on my machine, I have lost the ability to log on the domain via Windows XP on the same machine (dual boot). I realise that by re-joining the domain, under a different hostname in XP is a possible solution , another being using two NICs. Windows 7 is installed in a different disk that XP. Currently only win7 has access to the domain. Is there a temporary way of keeping both hostnames the same on both installs but both have AD access ? I was thinking on changing the SID on winXP to match the SID of win7 but having looked into it I doubt it will work. I realise that having both installs use the same hostname is very bad practise but I only need this until I transition into windows 7 and then I'll let XP rest on its laurels. PS: I do not have rights to administer the domain hence cannot add/remove computers from A/D. Thanks to anyone who read this.

If you want both machines to be members of the domain, you'll need to use two different computer names. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

Thanks for the reply. The two OSes are on the same machine... Is there no way of applying the credentials that Windows 7 now has to XP so that both get the ok from the domain ?

Each OS will have a different computer account SID. You cannot share the same computer account between two computers. Each OS will require its own computer account if you want them to be members of the domain.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
