Activation error 0x80070005 probably related to firewall - what ports need to be opened?
When I try to activate the RC I get the error code 0x80070005. I've read that this can be caused by firewalls but I have none enabled on my machine. The machine is in a corporate environment so I think the culprit is a hardware firewall that I don't have control over. I can't ask the IT Department to just turn the firewall off, but if I knew what port activation needed I might be able to get it opened at least temporarily. If this doesn't work is there a phone number I can call to activate windows? Thanks!

It looks like an open port may not be the issue - I found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/291983 And when I browse to https://www.microsoft.com:443 I'm able to see the site. Also, I brought in a laptop with a fresh install of W7 RC and attempted to activate on my work network, that went fine. What else could it be? Also, when I click for more info about the error it says "Access is denied"

This is not a firewall issue - the IT Staff turned off all firewalls for the building and activation still failed with the same message.

NoSuchThingAs2,Did you add this computer as a member of the network? If all traffic gets approved by the servers, you might have to have the computer added as a member of the Domain before it will work. When you browsed to Microsoft.com, did Internet Explorer ask for credentials?

Yes, the computer is a member of my work domain. Browsing to microsoft.com does not prompt for credentials.

Hi, You may want to check and verify that your system date and time is correct. I have answer a question just like this, (well not about a firewall) but this is worth looking at , for at least a few seconds of your time :-). I hope this helps, and if this the case then let me know of what year 7 said it was. the last onewas in 2099 or2010, i think itwas 2099, wow, i'mold compare back to 2009. Have a nice day/night.-WG-Windows Geek - 7 is better than any OS I have and never OWN!!!

I know dumb question, but is your product keys right one for the 32bit or the 64bit? Or have you tried to get another key from the download site? -Windows Geek - 7 is better than any OS I have and never OWN!!!

NoSuchThingAs2,I'm still not sure what the problem is, however while researching this issue, I found this pagewhich shows a walkthrough of manual activation (see method 2), and there is an option that they did not pick which says 'Show me other ways to activate'... Maybe that will help get past this issue?

Maybe I'll try calling the number listed here: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=10299&gprid=436975 Hope I don't have to pay $260 though!

Hello NoSuchThingAs2,Before you make that call it would be a good idea to check what services are currently running and whether or not any needed services are unexpectedly stopped. I have seen this error message in relation to several factors including firewalls anddate and time, but also with services that aren't running that should be such as DCOM and BITS.

Unfortunately I called Microsoft tech support (800 936 5700) and was told that there is no support for Windows 7 at this time (i.e. no human could help me with this error). I was directed to the Windows 7 web site. If anyone has a suggestion on how to fix this I'd really appreciate it - I'm using the OS for work and have 5 days left for activation.

Hi, have you tried to look up the error code?I found something relating to Xp and 2000 but i think it can applie here, it something to do with the Windows Geiune Tool, maybe try install the Vista one from MS downloads site,http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/917499I wish i could give u an answer that will solve this, and just look up the error code and see if you can get an answer there. And I tried Live.com, (which is now Bing), try them, since Ms owns it. Good luck-Windows Geek - 7 is better than any OS I have and never OWN!!!

This was started with Vista and can be done on Windows 7 up till now. I can only believe that it will continue to the RTM.

Thanks for this tip - so I tried to activate with this script by running slmgr.vbs /ato and got the message "Access denied: the requested action requires elevated privileges." I'll rearm for now and continue down this path when I need to.
