Activating Skype Business / Lync with an Office 365 University account

Hi

I have a successful installation of Office 365 on my home computer.  This is a personal copy of Office purchased using an Office 365 University subscription

I have now been asked to use Skype Business / Lync for my University to make calls on their behalf.  I am providing my own device and software but would login to their Lync servers.

However, Skype Business is asking to be activated and wants a product key.  The key for my Office 365 subscription is not working.

Can I activate Skype Business using an Office 365 University subscription and if so how do I do this?

Many thanks

Iain

Hi

Unfortunately, Office 365 University Subscription does not permit you to use Skype for Business Client. However, you can use the Lync 2013 basic client without the need for additional licencing.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=35451

This is a supported client for voice features with Skype for Business Back end servers. If you download this patch https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2889923 it patch the client to the SfB UI experience.

With the basic client, you lose come functionality https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425836%28v=ocs.15%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

but nothing major.

IMHO the University should be providing you with the tools you need for this, not you having to source your own licencing and hardware etc.

Hope this helps

thanks

Hi lain,

Office 365 University does not include the Lync Plan.

As Make Vale mentioned, you can use the Free version of Lync (Lync 2013 Basic) which is a slimmer version of the full Lync 2013 client and provides the same core functionality.

Best regards,

Eric
