Action Center message won't go away

I have a little annoyance with an Action Center PC issue message that I do not know how to get rid of. The message is listed as important, and shows up under the maintenance  heading as "Check your backup". The error was caused after I canceled a backup I was creating when I figured out I didn't have quite enough room for it on my other drive. I was able to successfully create the backup after clearing room for it, but the message never went away.

I see there is a check box to turn off notifications for specific issues, such as backups, but checking the box only hides the issue in the Action Center and does not get rid of it. The Action Center icon still remains in the system tray area, and occasionally displays its tooltip/balloon tip on the bottom right-hand side, which is the annoying part I guess. It also just kind of bugs me that my computer thinks there's an "important issue" wrong with it and I can't do anything about it.

Oh and clicking on the issue just brings me into setting another backup up again. I already used this to create my second attempt, and although successful, the issue remained. I don't suppose there's a way to clear out all the stored issues from where ever they're stored? Thanks.

Hi,

You can try following steps to clear report history:

  1.        Click Action Center icon on system tray area, and click Open Action Center.
  2.        Click Maintenance, and then, under Check for solutions to problem reports, click View reliability history.
  3.        Click View all problem reports.
  4.        At the bottom of the Review problem reports page, click Clear all problem reports.

Please let me know whether this issue has been fixed.

Keep post.

Hey,

I tried as you instructed and successfully cleared the problem reports. Unfortunately the "Check your backup" issue in the Action Center is still present, even after a reboot. Any other tips you would recommend trying? Thank you.

Hi,

Lets try following steps to narrow down the issue:

Step 1: Click Action Center icon, and click the message to open action center. Then, click Ignore this message under the Maintanance.

Step 2: Turn off Backup feature which is named as File history under Control Panel.

Then, restart the computer and let me know whats going one.

I'm not able to do your step 1, as there is nothing to click that says Ignore this message or anything similiar. The only button within the "Check your Backup (Important)" box is More Information, which just brings me into creating another backup. There is no Ignore anywhere within the Maintenance tab once expanded either.

As for step 2, my File History setting is off and never was on as far as I know.

Hi,

What about turning off the message specific to Windows backup from Action Center settings.

1. Open Action center by navigating to Start\Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Action Center.

2. Click on Change Action Control settings link on the left panel of the window.

3. Uncheck the Windows backup checkbox under Maintenance messages.

4. Click on OK

5. Close the window and restart the computer.

6. See if this removes the message.

7. To turn it back on, click on the same checkbox from step 3.

This should remove the obsolete backup message.

If it still persist, try this solution:

I have a similar issue after upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1.  I have the message "Check your backup results" in the Action Center.  I know that the message was there from Win8 and that "Windows 7 File Recovery" is deprecated and no longer available in Win8.1.  I can also confirm that unchecking "Windows Backup" under "Change Action Center settings" removes the message.  But is there a way to delete the message from the Event Viewer instead, now that I have already upgraded to Win8.1, so that this message will no longer appear in the Action Center??

I discovered a solution to remove the pop-up without having to reboot.

  • Open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE)
  • Go to the "Processes" tab
  • Find the "explorer" process and select end process.
  • Explorer and the taskbar will close.
  • Once closed, go back to "Task Manager" and select "Run" under the File menu.  Type in "explorer" to restart explorer.
  • The taskbar should reappear without the pop-up.

It worked for me like a charm.  To prevent issues in the future, I also followed the steps to stop the notifications from Action Center.
