Accessing some websites times out
Hi, Before connecting to the sites, can you ping them? I add some suggestions for your reference. 1. Update the latest driver of network adapter from manufacture manually. 2. Reset TCP/IP using command: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt 3. Reset Winsock using command: netsh winsock reset 4. Test the issue in Safe Mode with networking. I originally posted this on the main MS help forum, here is the original post.... We have one Win7 Home Premium machine that cannot connect to some websites, it just times out. One of the sites is the 192.168.0.1 router page, also www.cra.gc.ca which is the government's tax page. (I have others if anyone needs them). We have tried IE, Firefox and Opera with no success and I have tried the same sites with another Win7 Home Premium machine and WinXP machines and they all work. I have googled this and gone through various things, such as... Rebooting the router, Turning off IPv6, Turning off Java, Enabling pop-ups, Turning off the firewall, making sure all patches and updates are applied and a few I am sure I forgot. If anyone has anything they can suggest, I would be eternally grateful as this is driving me nuts, we got this machine a few months ago and it has never been able to access these sites. ......end of original post. Since then I have updated the router firmware, this made no difference. It was suggested that the router may be at fault but I do not see why one pc would have an issue when another pc with the identical (theoretically) operating system does not. Especially curious is the fact that this machine cannot access the router setup (it works fine from other Win7 computers). I also checked the hosts file to make sure that was ok, it is. I hope someone here can shed some light on this, Thanks, Tony Folley

Wow, I can't believe I didn't check for an updated driver! My only excuse is that it worked fine for 99%+ of sites and it suggested something more obscure. Mea Culpa, a network card driver update fixed the problem totally! Many thanks!

I tried changing the MTU but it made no difference, I also tried changing the speed to 10/100 half-duplex but that also made no difference. The dns was set to manual numbers so I deleted them and let it drop to the router's settings, that also made no difference. The network card had some power saving features enabled and a 'green' networking setting also enabled, I have disabled these but that made no difference either. I did find that the Wireshark logs showed illegal checksums but, after some research, it appears that it is because the checksum calculation is deferred to the network card so that also led nowhere. I was going to try a different network card, just for the hell of it, but it is pci-e and I only have pci ones here so that idea is on hold right now. I am going to look for some information on the driver for the network card though and see if that leads anywhere. I appreciate your attempts to assist me in this, Thanks, Tony

To follow up.... I tried Wireshark to see what was going on. When I try to connect to the router, the router attempts to send me the page so I can log in bit it doesn't seem to have any success, it attempted to send it 9 times before I gave up, the Windows circle thing just kept on turning. It appears that the pc is not acknowledging receipt of the packet, I can send the relevant part of the Wireshark log if anyone wants to take a look. Thanks, Tony Folley

can you run "netsh interface ipv4 show subinterface" on your command prompt on both pc's and compare if the MTU value differs? (ive seen behaviour like that when the mtu is bigger then what the router allows)

I never thought of mtu size! However, they are both set to 1500, which I think is standard isn't it? Thanks for trying, Tony

yes, 1500 is the standard for ethernet. and if they are the same it shouldnt behave different. if you want to you can try 1400 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314496) if your router uses pppoe (can be set via netsh as well), but seems to be something different, as you get the timeout already when accessing the router internally, and as you use the ip there, doesnt look like dns either. you can try a tracert to the ip and see if it tries to directly hop there or wants to go via another route, but as some pages work, doubt thats the issue either. do the computers use the same network card model? if not you can check if changing the speed in the properties of the nic from auto to the actual used, this can rarely cause trouble on auto.
