Accessing computers on my local network with the RC (7100)
I have a problem with the W7 RC accessing some computers on my home network. System: The network has up to 6 computers with either Win2000 Pro SP4 or WinXp Pro (actually 3 Win2K and 2 Xp Pro machines). The 7th computer is my Win7 test bed. All the computers log in using the built in administrators account (Administrator) with no password ( I know its dangerous but it works for me). I can access the shares on any computer with any other computer. Win7 Beta: Installed W7 beta on my test bed and set it up to log in using the built in administrators account with no password just like the others on the network. I can access all the shares on any of the network computers from the W7 computer and I can access the W7 Beta shares from any of the other computers. This is as it should be and it works OK. Enter Win7 RC. I put a new drive in my W7 test bed and installed the RC. Installation was uneventful with no GLITCH. I opened the network icon and I could see all the network computers. I opened the first one on my list and was able to see and access the shares. When I tried to open the next one, up popped a Windows Security dialog box asking for a user name and password (I never saw this box on the Beta release). I entered Administrator as the user with no password. The RC didnt like that and said that it wasnt valid. I checked all the computers and I could access the shares on all the Xp machines and one of the Win2k machines. The other two win 2K machines could not be accessed. Switched back to the Beta release and everything worked OK. I have no idea whats wrong or where to start to fix the RC installation. Whats even more perplexing is that one of the Win2k machines can be accessed, the other two cannot. Help! 17 May 2007 I still had no luck fixing the Release Candidate so I wiped the drive with the RC installed and re-installed the Beta. Again, the Beta worked fine providing access to all the computers on the network. Then I used the RC to upgrade the Beta hoping it would preserve all my settings. The upgrade went OK but when I finished I had the same problem accessing the local network computers. One thing I did notice was that if I pointed to the network icon in the system tray the Beta install said Assess: Local and Internet. The Release Candidate said Access: Internet only. Somethings wrong?

Try switching OFF password protected sharing. The reason it dosen't like Administrator with no password is because all passwords can't be zero-length (ie. blank) when dealing with network shares
