Accessing a NAS suddenly doesnt work!

Hi

I've got a D-Link DNS320 - which I've had for a few years - with no problems at all.

Suddenly, I cannot access it via the mapped drives - using it's device name 'mediaserver'.  I can access it via a mapped drive using its IP address, but this isn't ideal as the address will change occasionally.

Anyone any idea as to what might have changed?  As I say, it's worked fine for years!

Thanks

Hi,

Have you changed your DNS settings? Whether all machine has this issue?

As you said, you can access it with IP address, but with its device name you cannot access it. It seems like that there are issues related with name resolution. Please try to ping the FQDN name of the NAS? If it does not return the correct IP address, I suggest you flush your dns cache first:

ipconfig /flushdns

Please also open control panel > users > manage credentials. Check whether there is a credential for NAS, if there is, please remove it and check the result.

One thing to verify is in
Administrative Tools / Local Security Policy / Local Policy / Security Options

Did this policy changed?

Hi. it works fine on my other laptop.

I've not changed anything - I just came home from being away, and suddenly it wouldn't work.

I've made the changes you suggest, except for the Local security policy, which I cannot find.

Further digging - if I NSLOOKUP the ipaddress, it returns a different name.  when I ping that name, it returns the correct IP address.

So, it seems this laptop has got its DNS up the shoot somehow.  As I can map a drive to this 'other' name.

So, how do I change the local DNS to reflect it's proper name?

right - sorted it somehow.  Checked name on NAS - was still correct name, but changed description to the same. rebooted everything a few times....

eventually, seems to be fine!  weird!

Great - problem back again today.....

It looks like my Sky hub is causing the problem, as the NSLOOKUP is showing the wrong server name - but my other laptop doesn't seem affected.

Hi,

If only this machine has this issue, it seems like the DNS setting is different with other laptop, please check other's DNS settings by run ipconfig/all command.

And change DNS server settings according to the output:
