Access denied to C: Drive
Ok, I insalled windows 7 RC1 (7100) on one of my Vista machines afer backing it up. The install went fine, and everything worked ! The lot. Brilliant. A few days later, I was experimenting with the network types on my Wifi connection. I cant remember if I changed from home to office, or from office to home type network. And that was it ! I kept getting messages says the administrator has restricted access to my C: Drive. I was in the admin account, and I certainly hadn't ! Nothing would recover this. System restore would not run. Logging out, and back in under another Admin enabled account didnt work either. ____, I couldn't even open an explorer window. The install was totally crippled. I have restored back to Vista for now. Has anyone got any idea how to recover from this should it happen again ? Oh, and remote RDP to a windows 2000 server from windows 7 is broken, it runs over 30% CPU constantly and bogs the machine down (1.6 intel dual core 945 express chipset).

Pcdabbler,Maybe this was related (even though you were in the admin group). It appears to be the same issue, somewhat.

I have had a similar experience, but it was when I played around with HOMEGROUP. I started a thread in another forum, can't remember which one, and was replied to, but hat idea failed to work.It looks like this might be a bug, there have been numerous threads started on the topic. No harm, no foul, I had installed W7 on a "play" PC, a 2.53gh, 865 chipset, on a spare drive off a shelf. Not a big deal to wipe the drive and start over.Sorry I can't offer any real help.Brad

I got "access denied" for the C:\ object soon after I turned off the HOMEGROUP.Windows Explorer still showed most everything in both the left and right panes, but attempts to expand anything in either pane got the "access denied" pop-up. Also, I could not even create a new folder on the desktop ("access denied").Properties for C:\ worked, so I checked permissions. No user had permission to use C:\ (!)Checking ownership showed "Administrators." I changed it to my userid. Then I could give permissions to my userid (and to Administrators just in case). No more "access denied" pop-ups. :)tullik= = = = = = = = = = = = more added ...It is possible, even probable, that the issue arises only if you previouslymade C:\ a shared object. You might have done this, for example, when your computer is part of a secured home network and you trust everyone in the house. lolYou can reproduce the issue at will as follows:Control Panel-->HomeGroup-->Leave the HomeGroup-->confirmation/acknowledgment dialogPermissions for C:\ are immediately gone. :(You can get them back manually by respecifying ownership with the kludgy Properties-->Security-->Advanced-->et cetera dialog implied earlier above. They come back at once (no restart required).
