Access USB storage device attached to a Vista machine from Windows 7
I have a 500gb Lacie USB drive connected to a Vista Utimate machine shared as "Lacie". For the purpose of the test, I have set Everyone on the security for the share to Full Control. I will tighten this later. The WIndows 7 RC machine sees the PC with the USB, and can see the share, but when I try to access the share I get an "Access denied" error. Both computers are on the same WORKGROUP. Both are on the same network, 192.168.1. The Vista machine is patched to latest level. The two computer connect through a D-Link 1016D gigabit switch.I vaguely recall seeing something about a guest account in either this or another forum, but I dont use the guest account. For security reasons it is one of the first accounts I disable when I install an O/S.I want ot use the drive for backups. When (if) I upgrade to Windows 7 I want to use the backup for each of the cleints. Right now I have bloated scripted functions set up since Vista's Backup cant back up to network locations.Would I be better of buying some NAS? Something I could connect to the router? What would be a good brand? I tried the WD Worldbook (or whatever it was called), but that was rubbish. Ended up getting a refund. What would be recommended for someone on a limited budget?

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following 1. Please reconfigure the share on the Windows Vista computer with the following: File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista Please note the section Administrative Shares and Sharing the Root of a Drive. 2. Please also right click on the drive which you want to share, select properties and check the security tab to ensure that you have assigned Full control to Everyone. 3. Please disable the Password protected sharing in Network and Sharing Center on both computers. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
