Access Denied on random Client machines, Cannot 'Open', 'Save', 'Move' Files. e.g. Microsoft Word Files.
At our company we have Windows 7 client machines, about 70% using offline files because there in an out of the Office. We also have WIN SERV 2008 R2, all machines connected to a domain. All clients are allocated a personal mapped network drive through the GPO. Over night last week, one of my colleagues that works from home contacted me regarding trouble 'Saving' work to her personal drive. And this colleague had not connected to the network for a week or so. We suggest that our colleagues connect to the network either at our offices or by connecting to the VPN though the pptp process to make a backup by syncing their offline files regularly. I was very much confused and could not get my head around the saving problem, and because i had not changed any settings on the GPO and that she had not connected to the network for some time there must have been some sort of update to some program, a windows update, maybe even a virus :-( BUT... the next few days nearly everyone of my colleagues have been receiving 'Access Denied' and 'You have no permission' errors. All occurring at different time periods and also happening differently. Error appear when colleagues are :- Trying to open files from their personal mapped ffolder, that are connected with offline files.Saving files, e.g. adjusting files that they have opened from their personal files and then trying to save them and files recieved as email attachments, they cannot save them, or even open them sometimes.Moving or trying to attach a file to and email.Delete a file/ffolderSometimes the client machines will have trouble opening different fformats .doc's and .docx's. Creating a test doc file and docx file, saving it and then not able to open the file afterwards. One solution i have got to work, When a colleague received the access denied error, i would switch user and log in as the 'Administrator' and then 'Stop' the Antivirus service, Sophos being our antivirus, i stopped the 'SAVSERVICE'. By letting the client to log back in to their own profile again and try to save or open work to their personal network drives, it works!! But the Sophos Antivirus Service starts back up after some time but doesn't affect the user for some time. I have been in contact with Sophos Technical support to really get to grips with the problem and to find out if it is sophos problem, but yet to find out what it is. Has any body else had this problem? Was the previous Windows Update to blame? Ben Roberts

Hi, Firstly, please let us know if you use logon script or GPP to map the drivers. It is recommended Using Group Policy Preferences to Map Drives and then test the issue again. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

Hi Jeremy, Yes every mapped drive is shared through the Group Polices on our Windows Server 2008 R2. I've been trying to disable different kinds of components from our Antivirus Sophos, to the windows defender. We have completely removed Sophos as well and Access Denied still appears. I have also disabled Offline Files on 3 of my colleagues's machines. And they seem to be working fine ever since, colleagues without offline files also havent received the problem. The one thing that is just really bugging me is that as i said in my previous thread, colleagues that are working from home that haven't connected to our network for a few weeks are also getting problems. I cant get my head around how its happen over night, when it has been working fine for a very long time. I have also checked recent Windows Updates, the last update consisted in Windows Security Updates that dealt with Windows Defender, that why we tried disabling windows defender but again it didn't work. I have also tried removing a machine off the domain and re-attaching it, everything seemed to be fine all day until the machine was booted up again the next day. Could some service be causing the problem? BenBen Roberts

This could be a sign of virus. One of the computers could be affected with the virus and then acting as a (rogue) DHCP server. Issuing invalid DHCP/DNS information. I would start with "Ipconfig /all" make sure that clients who are having the problem have proper IP, DNS, DHCP and that the information was issued by authorized DHCP server.

Hi Ben, Since Sophos was completely removed, it wont be the cause; Windows Defender update should not affect it either. After reviewing the history, Id like to confirm the following points: 1. Does the issue occur intermittently on one client? Or a persisted status? 2. What I concerned is Offline Files, you mentioned: I have also disabled Offline Files on 3 of my colleagues machines. And they seem to be working fine ever since, colleagues without offline files also havent received the problem. So, if you have a client which is able to reproduce the issue, please dig it further: try disabling Offline Files and delete the local cache, then the issue will be resolved after a reboot? 3. When the issue occurs, please access the UNC path directly from the client, what is result? Is the UNC path a DFS path? 4. On the problematic client, check the map drive status to determine if the folder/file was opened in Online or Offline status.
