Access Control - Write Issues with Access Program
hi,I will try to keep this brief..I am not a programer, just a hack.. but several years ago I created a project that is still going strong and increasing in sales as time goes on.. Not being a programer I purchased and use access developers tool kit for access 97 which takes care of the installation process for me..Installing the application on Windows 7 works fine and all is good until I go to run the application then it stops with an error.. This is because on installation Windows 7 does not give user access rights to write or modify the mdb and mde access files. Once I perform a manual change everything works the way it should. So whilst I understand why this has all evolved, I have no idea how I am going to be able to get around it... As this is not something that is a property of these files, this is a new setting and setup for windows 7...My problem is that the average person on the street is not going to download my program and expect to have to change settings in windows to get it to work.. Over the recent years I have realised that 98% of the users of my program are not computer people, they are mum and dads with no real pc skills. So they will be expecting to download the software and install it and begin using it...Does anyone have any idea how I can resolve this issue.. What do I need to do to enable the software to install on Windows 7 with write and modify rights to the mdb and mde files...Please note that I have already formated and performed 3 standard windows 7 installations to ensure that I am not changing anything... My application is unchanged and works on the other windows systems without any problem. So I know its all to do with Windows 7, but I cannot foresee how I am going to instruct windows to allow these files to be modified... thanksJohn

Hi John, We need to run the program as Admin to let this program have permission to write and modify files. Thanks.

hi Robinson, thanks for your reply I understand that running in admin will work, I am putting a file together to explain to simply change the write permission of the main directory as this will solve everything, but this still does not get around the average guy on the street being able to download software, install it and run it... I do note that a difference exists with running in admin as apposed to installing in admin as there is no such thing as an administrator with win7 (not the way we have been use to).. So am I to understand from you have said that every similar program on the market is going to have the same problem ? I can see a huge mess and mass confussion... I understand why microsoft did this but to disallow permission to ones own data files is amazing... The average guy on the street is not going to understand any of this. is there a way to write dos commands to have the users allow write permission.. as I could run a file after install an have it apply the changes (but then again we may need admin to run that as well ?) thanks John
