A problem that will make your head spin
Ok..... This is long, please read all of it before posting. So this issue dates back weeks. My nic stopped connecting to the internet, I was still receiving an ip from the router, but I could not access the router setup page, or any website. Attempting to ping my router any other computer on the network or an outside ip, would result in 100% loss. No other computer on the network was having any problems. After plenty of troubleshooting (I'm not a novice), I came to the conclusion that the nic was fried and I ordered a wireless card. While the card was in the mail, I used a really old card of mine, the connection was TERRIBLE but it still worked, I could browse websites. The new card arrives, everything installs fine... But I'm right back to the same old problem that I had with the nic... I can connect to the router via wireless, I am being assigned an ip address, but I cannot connect to the router, ping the router or access the internet. Then something bizzar happens while I'm copying files off for a wipe. I was able to load google.com.... but it took 30 seconds, and no image poped up... Now internet connectivity comes and goes, but I am unable to connect to any page or my router. Now... Heres the kicker, after all this I put my laptop down next to my desktop, and all of a sudden I couldn't access any web page. Took it away from my desktop, and connectivity came back. I did this a number of times, and was about to recreate the anomaly. So my question to all you gurus out there, what the ____, and how do I fix it. Windows 7, x64 Update: Just reinstalled windows, still having the same problem. Update: After putting a spare high gain antenna on, I successfully loaded google.com, took about 2 minutes to load the page. Haven't been able to access anything else. Pinged google.com packet 1 572ms packet 2 1422ms packet 3&4 loss Hilarious Update: I turned my 2 antenna upside down, I am no longer having connectivity issues, but I'm getting horrible speeds. The adapter claims to be connected at 300mbps, but the connection is active at 50 bytes/sec downloading. I'll finish downloading firefox in 2 hours and 19 minutes, lol. Update: Network speeds are superfast in safe mode.

Ended up going through all the services one by one, disabling then restarting. After disabling the "Windows Management Instrumentation" everything started working perfectly. Anyone have any ideas on that one?

To me, and this is just my humble opinion, if it works perfectly well in safe mode but not normally it sounds like some kind of a driver or bus issue. We have about 750 of the same computers here. Some will have network issues on one router but not another. While we have not figured it out perfectly we do know that some of the newer routers sense errors and will not repond to network cards that are having errors. Likewise an older router will work perfectly with that card. In our case it appears to be a PCI bus issue where even though the card works well, the PCI bus loses communication with it. This makes for some strange symptoms. Unfortunately for us, the computer manufacturer went under and our only recourse is to replace the motherboard with another when we find one misbehaving like this. So - if it were me, I would try to find drivers from the manufacturer for the specific network card and try those. We have found that some drivers, especially those on older (3 years+) motherboards are not always as stable in W7 as XP. My home computer which is AMD based did the same thing as yours until MS uploaded a new PCI bus driver for it in via windows updates and then all the issues went away.

Thank you for the reply. Allright, well I guess I'll just play the waiting game. I have a question that might be related, there is no grounding wire in my house, so my computer isn't grounded. Would this cause any interference problems.

I just suspect that the wireless devices in your laptop and desktop interrupt each other. I suggest you change the tuning for the wireless adapter of your laptop. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Providing your hardware specifics would help. Turn everything off, including the router. Place the antenna in the proper position. Connect the original problem computer via ethernet cable to the router. Turn on the router-good signal lights? Turn on the computer connected to the router via ethernet cable? Have internet? Boot the notebook and attempt to connect wirelessly? Have internet? Items to check: Firmware update for router Nic drivers for both computers Firewall settings if a third party security program is being used I can't comment on your wiring, but 3-prong to 2-prong adapters grounded to the outlet box should be used if you do not have 3-prong outlets. Just replaced the wireless card with a USB one. Hardware is: Windows 7 x64 Kaspersky net security Core 2 duo 3.00ghz 2.67ghz (should be at 3) 4gb ram Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX/9800GTX+ Netgear WNDA3100v2 USB wireless adapter Router is a Belkin F5D8236-4 v2 All drivers, software and firmware has been updated. After running perfectly for 24 hours, the usb nic now randomly drops to limited connectivity, and then the device vanishes until the comp is restarted or the device is unplugged and plugged back in.

Uninstall Kaspersky, leave the license info. Install Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ to have protection. Test for a while, your problems should go away. If they do, find another security product or use the free MSE.

Thank you all for the replies! New problem just showed up, the modem light on my router is blinking orange. I'm connected directly to the modem as we speak and have internet access. I can access the router page via wireless or plugged in, I've tried 3 different cables. Is the router fried? Belkin F5D8236-4 v2 firmware is updated.

So, you have internet at the modem and via ethernet with one known good cable. That light indicates a problem with the modem. (or at least, how the modem communicates with the router). You could try the reset button on the router to return to factory settings. Start a command prompt while connected directly to the modem. Start>type cmd.exe in the search box>select it from the results>type ipconfig /all and check the results. What is the ip address? if it begins with a 192.168.x.x your modem is a router also. Does your ISP require any unique settings? This Belkin link takes you to the ISP support page to discover if any specific settings are required. Tried setting everything back to factory, when connected directly to the modem my ip was isp designated, not local. Sense everything pointed to the router, I bought a new one. Got everything set up and working in a few seconds.... Would be weird to think that it was the router the whole time causing all these problems.

I have an interesting question for one of you gentlemen, what is "Native WIFI Default Profile" and why does windows keep creating the network and automatically connecting to it, even though im already connected to another network. Or should I even be worried.

Thank you to everyone who has responded and helped so far. All the previous problems are gone, but a new one has poped up. My wireless usb adapter very randomly, 1-2 times a day sometimes not at all, will drop connection to limited access, I cannot access the router, if i disable the device it cannot be re enabled (even though the dialogue says it is). And if I run windows diagnostic, the adapter vanishes til restart or it is unplugged and plugged back in. Drivers are updated. WNDA3100v2 - RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB Adapter

What was the solution to the previous head spinner? Replaced failed router? Remove\Reinstall Kaspersky? Motherboard drivers? Have you updated the BIOS and motherboard inf\drivers with Windows 7 versions?
July 28th, 2010 2:20pm

Well I don't know if you can call it a solution, but yes, replacing the router, and grounding the computer. Also, Kaspersky needed its self defense to be disabled every time a driver was installed, updated or changed. Currently all drivers/firmware/Bios is updated.
