ADSL and PPPoE
I have a problem with connecting to the internet. My system is a new HP.I am using Vista's broadband PPPoE to connect to my ISP and am able to connect to the majority of sites. However, I cannot access any of Microsoft's various sites, and a handful of other non-related sites. They just time out. However, if I use a switch (Netgear RP114), let the switch connect to my ISP using its PPPoE dialer and then connect my PC to the switch, I am then able to connect to every site.Is there a patch to this issue? I have scoured MS's site and googled till my eyes goggled, and found no answer. It looks like a problem with the Broadband connection ability in Vista. Some tech friends of mine have agreed that this is the issue. Thanks in advance,Daniel

Hi Daniel, Thank you for the post. Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following information: 1. What is the manufacturer and model of the network adapter? Wired or wireless? 2. What error message was received in the IE window when the issue occurred? 3. Please confirm if the Windows Vista machine get the same DNS Server in the two situations:----------------------a. dialup PPPoE by using the Windows Vista built-in broadband PPPoE wizard. b. dialup PPPoE by using the Switch. Meanwhile, Please perform Windows Update and install all available update packets. Thanks. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

I work at an ISP up in Canada. We are experiencing many issues with PPPoE in Vista, very similar to this. Now I work back at the tech bench. It seems when Vista handles the PPPoE, it has the issue. Now, before I answer the questions you asked, as they pertain to my clients, I will say a few things I've noticed. It seems to be an issue on OEM computers, mainly HP/Compaq (most of the customers with problems have these systems, a couple of Dells too). If you leave them connected for 3-8 hours, direct to the PPPoE modem, it eventually will just start working. If you have it behind a router, where Vista ONLY is working off of DHCP, then it works perfectly fine, every site, etc. Now, I HAD this fixed for one customer, my main test customer who lives out of town. To fix it I did:netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disablednetsh int ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1452 store=persistentWell, it worked for about a month. They have Windows Updates set to NEVER, but on Dec. 27th, Vista forced an update, and it killed the PPPoE for them again.....If you have the computer on a router, for several hours, and then connect it direct to the modem, it will maintain the IP address and gateway from the router, and use it to interact with the modem. You can connect, disconnect, and to your hearts content, WITHOUT restarting, and all sites are fine. You restart and it is broken again.I've tried statically assign the IPv4 IP address and Gateway, matching the info it detects from a router, and it doesnt give me the exclamation for Limted connection, but when you initate PPPoE, sites like microsoft.com, msn.ca, engadget.com are all unavailable again.I'm even working on a HP Laptop as we speak (Vista Home Premium 32b), so I will answer the questions you asked.1. nVidia Networking Controller. Mobo is nForce 506/520 based, driver v 65.6.5.0. Wired2. There is absolutely no error message. In IE it just sits there, and does nothing, in Firefox, it will sometimes show a logo beside where you type the URL, but it just sits there. I can also ping these domains (I know they are designed to reject pings), but it will bring up the exact IP when I ping the domain.3a. I get the specific DNS when using the built in PPPoE.3b. The exact same DNS comes up when behind the router.Feel free to either post back here, or email me. This is a little project I've been working on for my company. Most users, say "It's just another wonderful feature of Windows Vista", and buy a router. It's not just my ISP, as there are 1000s of pages you can google, where people are having this issue. I've seen 10+ posts of ISPs saying they have discontinued support for Vista PPPoE due to how problematic it is.I have multiple customers that have this issue, and have no problems with getting ahold of them to test various solutions out. Most common denominators I have found so far are nVidia controllers + Vista. I have read several people have tried switching to Realtek 8139 or 8029 controllers, without any success either. These are my findings, my email is public, so if you want to reply here, or contact via email, I will be around.Cheers!xTechniciaNx

Hi xtechx, Thank you for providing the detailed information. From the description, I understand that the Windows Vista computer cannot browse some websites (especially the Microsoft websites), when it is plugged into the DSL modem. First, please confirm whether IE hangs when the issue occurs. Meanwhile, please check if the update KB939653 is installed on the Windows Vista computer. If so, please temporarily remove it and check the result. For more information, please check the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=939653 In addition, please export the subinterface parameters for further research by using the following command: netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces I look forward to your reply. Hello Joson,Your welcome.Ok, maybe this would be considered a "hang", but the application never stops responding. Firstly though, for IE, it thinks about it for about 10-15 seconds, then it says Page Cannot Be Displayed.Similar results with 3 3rd party browsers, now I know you don't support them whatsoever, but I figured I would inform you of the results anyways. Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11 thinks about it forever, I use the FasterFox plugin, which displays time to load the page, and it will just endlessly count, sometimes it will show the logo up beside the address in the address bar, like it recognizes, but it never shows the page. Safari 3.04 Beta tells me that it Can't Connect to Server. Opera 9.25 says it Can't Locate Remote Server (which is weird, because you think it could at least see the domain). The hotfix was NOT installed on the system, but I did apply it. It did NOT correct the issue. Removed it afterwords, and still the same. That being said, and with 3 3rd party browsers tested, it leads me to believe it is something with the TCP/IP stack, or something else.I believe auto tuning tweaks the RWIN, although I'm not too sure exactly. I have it disabled at the moment. Also, the MTU I previously mentioned DID fix the problem for someone, until an udpate came through on the 27th, but I don't think they restarted the computer, just the update forced a restart. On the subject of MTU I tried everything from 1500 down to 1388 in increments of 8. I even tried 576, the classic dialup MTU, but that did not work either.Again, like I said before, I can ping which will report the correct IP, which is correct, but obviously the domains are set to reject pings.I've attached pictures of the following commands, as the customer has his laptop right now, but he was in the office today, so I snapped 3 photos. Commands used:netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfacesnetsh interface ipv4 show globalnetsh interface tcp show globalHopefully they are clear enough for you, apparently my hand wasn't as steady on the 2nd and 3rd shot. Anyways, I've posted them on a 3rd party hosting site. The link is:http://mihd.net/5st4vfI hope that information maybe helps out a bit. Unfortunately he had to take his system with him the other day, as he does use his laptop for work, but I can always contact him or a number of other customers to test different things.Cheers!

Hi xtechx, Again, thank you for the detailed information. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you troubleshoot this issue. However, please understand that trace/debug and dump analysis may be required to identify/resolve this kind of issue. First, we can capture network packet for further research. If the culprits cannot be identified through Netmon (for example, Netmon indicated that the Windows Vista computer could successfully get the website message), you may need to contact our CSS for further troubleshoot (such as debug or dump analysis) since these troubleshooting methods are out of our forums support boundary. Thank you for your understanding. For more information on CSS services, please click here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;OfferProPhone#faq607 Now, lets focus on the issue first. Please perform the following steps to capture the network packets: ============================================ Log on to the Windows Vista machine with the local Administrator account. Download the NetMon3.1 from the following link and install it on the machine:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en Right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. After that, press F10 to start NetMon. Open IE, access Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com) to reproduce the issue. Once the issue occurs, the error message: Page Cannot Be Displayed is shown on IE, open Command Prompt and type ping www.microsoft.com. After that, please go back to the IE, and access another third party website such as www.google.com. After the webpage is displayed, go back to the Netmon window and press F11 to stop the Netmon on the Windows Vista machine. Press Ctrl+S to save the netmon files. Please place the Windows Vista computer behind a Router and capture the network packets again in order to compare the normal packets and the abnormal ones. After that, please zip the above two Netmon files, name the zip file using your name and upload to the following space: https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=a0eb980c-720a-4f5d-a3a6-6e05b5e7964d Password: gTC@^Midv9pF9W-x I look forward to your reply. Have a nice day. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

I have fixed this problem on my own.It appears to be an issue with many ISP's. In my case here, I have heard that my current ISP, along with Shaw cable has the same problem. What it looks like, is the IPV6 doesn't work with the ISP's. When this is REMOVED, not disabled, but removed, everything works. This is why using a router works. Most routers do not have the IPv6 running on them.It looks like the newer computers with Vista have this protocol installed by default, as do the new Mac's.This is a huge problem that the ISP's will need to fix, for when we finally have to move over to the new protocol, stuff may hit the fan.I hope this helps some people out there.Daniel

Joson, I was unable to actually get to the updates, as I was unable to reach MS sites in any way.I had specified the router was a Netgear RP114, which is wired.I do not remember the error unfortunately. Thanks for your help.Daniel

Hi, i'm Max, an italian technician. This issue has not been resolved, I'm having the sameproblem with one of my customer's computer. It's a Compaq Presario sr5127cl, wich came with vista32 home premium installed.Works fine if connected to a router, load only light pages (like google) if connected via ppoe.Contacted nvidia (eth drivers) and HP, still waiting for reply. Can't uninstall ip6 with nvidia drivers, disabled ip6 but still the same problem.Temporarely fixed rolling back from nvidia eth drivers 65.7.4.0 to microsoft eth drivers 6.2.0.126.If i leave "automatic updates" turned on (as required by the customer) and connect, the next startup drivers are updated to the "wrong" nvidia and still can't navigate.Another customer with another brand new Compaq desktop solved the problem this way: buyed an xp pro licence and ask me to "upgrade" to xp (wich is NOT supported by compaq,as allnew models, thank you, hp guys)Any help?Thank You, Max.

I'm a helpdesk technican for an ISP. We use PPPoE as well, and have experienced this issue a multitude of times. The only fix we have come up with so far has to do with the MTU settings for the network card. I'm going to make this as detailed as possible because it's likely that some novices are going to come across this thread in a google search.- Go into the Control Panel- Double click on "Network and Sharing Center"- Click "manage network connections" on the left.- Right click on "Local Area Connection" and choose "properties"- Click the "Configure" button- Click the "Advanced" tab at the top- Under "Property" choose "Priority and VLAN" or "VLAN and Priority" (It varies for different cards.)- Under "Value" select "Disabled"Click OK. If you were already connected to your ISP, the connection will drop and take about 2 minutes before you can reconnect. Once you reconnect, the problem should be solved. As far as we can tell, there is a Windows update that causes this to happen. I hope this helps someone! Good luck!

Thank You very much, Mystiii, well explained. It happened exactly what You described, and now it works. I'm waiting a feedback from this user, and waiting a couple of days before considering it definitively fixed. I'm also wondering on what is the relation between virtual lan support and mtu, i'll search for more information. I'veappreciatedYour help,I will let You know if i have more news, regards, Max.

Also being a technican for an ISP, this is what we came up with also, to fix the Vista and PPPoE (mtu) issue. mystiii wrote: I'm a helpdesk technican for an ISP. Thank you very much. This resolution seems much nicer than what mine was (you can reverse it when everyone gets their act together).I have confirmed that this worked, and I have contacted one of the major ISP's in my city, and they say that this is what they now do as well.Alas, one of my friends, who uses a Mac, couldn't get this to work, so he just removed the IPv6 as I had.Hopefully they eventually create a proper standard implementation of the everything so that routers can speak with PPPoE to systems, to ISP's, to Hosts, etc. This chain is too broken at the moment.Again, thanks.Daniel

Hi Xtech, Ifoundyour article to be close to be relevant to my issue. To be precise , i'm having issues with vista and my ADSL broadband connection, and searching for a solution. I list my comp details below, -- HP Pavilion-Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4700 @ 2.60GHz --NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Networking Controller (Driver Version -67.7.6.1, 2-19-2008) -- And using a modem provided by my ISP.9(ITI- DNA-A211-10 Both the computer and the ADSL connection are new and as such worked fine for about 15 days , after which i was on the phone with my ISP, who have my modem set up in some thing called "BridgeMode" changing it from the original PPPoE option. This set up works, but i would like to get back to by original set up. As i am dealing with modems/ip adddress etc... i am kinda lost.. and would appreciate any help. Thank you. adz64
