8024402F error when trying to update
W7 64 SR1. Activated OK Just loaded W7 into a brand new PC, still uncluttered by 3rd party software. Tested Interent and downloaded Security Essentials without issue. When I tried to run windows update it returned error 8024402F. After lot's of research and striking further issues with MS products, I am stumped. Windows fixits also run to error. An attempt to download IE9 results in slow response then redirection to a 'could not load website, try later' page. I tried stopping and restarting windows update server but there was no change. I tried reinstallation; same result. I navigated to update.microsoft.com to (correctly) receive the message I need to run update from the laptop. From discovering the issue to giving up took about 6 hours. Am I missing something simple? Did the MS Server die recently or is there another issue affecting update, fixits and IE9 download are not behaving as they should?

Hi Stevie will, This error is reported when there are some errors in downloading or validating. In addition to the bove suggestion, you can check the WindowsUpdate.log to see if it contains any FATAL errors. Hi, Firstly, please let us know the following information: 1. How did you install Windows 7, upgrade or clean install? 2. Did you install any update before encountered the issue? 3. Have you installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 yet? Meanwhile, please try the following troubleshooting steps and see how them work: Step 1. Rename the Windows Update temporary folders: ==================================== 1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop CryptSvc ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old net start CryptSvc net start wuauserv pause 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop. 4. Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator". 5. You will see a DOS-like window processing. Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved. Step 2. Run Microsoft Fix It Tool 50202 to reset Windows Update components: ==================================================== 1. Please download the tool from the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it to your computer. 3. Locate the downloaded file and double click it to run the tool. 4. Follow the steps in the wizard. When you are prompted, please click to check the box before the Aggressive option. 5. After it is finished, please restart the computer. If it still does not resolve the issue, let's proceed to step 3. Step 3. Run the System Update Readiness Tool ==================================== 1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 32-bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=44e15787-66b0-4e9c-9c3b-1fc9ea40f69f System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 64-bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=914fbc5b-1fba-4bae-a7c3-d2c47c6fcffc 2. I've had a host of issues since asking the question, including not being able to log on to social.technet and, when this obstacle was overcome, being able to reply. I also had problems being unable to run or download Fixits. MSE updates are a problem as well. Since they update the same way, that was not a surprise. I digress. Update is working now but only after switching off. I now find with firewall on, I get the error "Name resolution for the name www.download.windowsupdate.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded." appearing in the Event log. So, I seem to have configured myself around most of the issues. Thank you to everyone who responded. All answers helped a little. The reason I am responding to your message is that you mention what appears to be the key to the final part of the problem. I am a newbie to W7 Firewall. Are there clear instructions somewhere how to configure W7 Firewall to enable windows updates? I Windows update would have been listed in ADvanced Inbound or Outbound rules but I can't see any entry that appears relevant either allowing or blocking traffic.

Nothing is working for me. Update simply will not work with Windows Firewall running. There is no third party security software installed. It's a Microsoft issue. Even the following vbs runs to error if Firewall is on: '************************** Set updateSession = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.Session") Set updateSearcher = updateSession.CreateupdateSearcher() Set searchResult = updateSearcher.Search("IsInstalled=0") msg = 0+searchResult.Updates.Count & " updates available" & vbcrlf If searchResult.Updates.Count <> 0 Then 'If updates were found For i = 0 To searchResult.Updates.Count - 1 Set update = searchResult.Updates.Item(i) msg = msg & update.Title & vbcrlf Next End If msgbox msg '***************************

Hi, Firstly, please let us know the following: 1. Does the issue also occur in other computers on the same network? 2. Where do you got your Windows 7 Installation Media, is it a retail version? Meanwhile, based on your description, it seems that Windows Firewall blocks Windows Update. Therefore, please search Windows Firewall with Advanced Security in Start Menu, right click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer and choose Restore Default Policy and see how it works. Note: please backup your Windows Firewall Policy via Export Policy first. If Windows Update works properly after reset Windows Firewall Policy, we can conclude that the issue is caused by wrong Windows Firewall policies. If it doesnt work, please import the pervious policies back. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

I do know from previous employment the forgeries are excellent but doubt this is the issue - I can update with Firewall off. I agree Firewall seems to be the issue. Meanwhile the only rules I have manually set in my Firewall since new were two Outbound rules just done now in an attempt to circumvent the issue: %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe Service - BITS %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe Service - wuauserv If this fails, I will try your suggestions - thank you - before feeding back in a couple of days.

Found the time to test today. Above Outbound firewall rules resulted in no change. Reverting Firewall to default also failed to fix the issue. Note: In both above cases, the PC was restarted before testing the change. Switch Firewall off and down comes the update. While creating a Firewall rule should be unnecessary, could it be that I have the syntax wrong?

Hi, Based on the current situation, I suggest checking which Windows Firewall rule blocks Windows Update indeed. Please search gpedit.msc in Start Menu. Run gpedit.msc and enable the policy Windows Firewall: Allow Logging which under Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connections -> Windows Firewall -> Standard Profile. Please also select Log dropped packets and Log successful connections in this policy. Please close other applications and run Windows Update again. Open pfirewall.log under C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles and check if there is any traffic is denied. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

Hi, I noticed that the UDP traffics which from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.4 through port 3072 are dropped. Therefore, I suggest to try the following: 1. If it is possible, please try to connect to Internet bypass your wireless router, run Windows Update again with Windows Firewall on and see how it works. 2. Open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security and new an Inbound Rule. In New Inbound Rule Wizard, please choose Port -> UDP -> Specific local ports: 3072 -> Allow the connection and finish this rule. Run Windows again and see how it works. If issue persists, please provide the latest log after running Windows Update. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

Jeremy Thank you for sticking with me on this... which might give you a clue to the result:o) Connection via cable with wireless off made no difference (I was suspicious of my wireless connection, which suffers occasional dropout for no apparent reason). Allowing port 3072 seemed to make no difference, despite me double-checking I had each of the above steps correct when it failed the first time.: 2012-04-22 09:29:48 DROP UDP 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2 3072 60082 256 - I neglected to mention something: When I opened Firewall rules to check inbound rules, the rule to allow 3072 has a closed lock icon rather than a green tick (or for example, an open lock). I am used to interpreting this on user folders as meaning the user has access. Is it significant in this instance?

Hi Stevie, Based on this and previous log, Im afraid that the issue is caused by your router. Therefore, in order to verity this, please bypass your router and connect to your ADSL Modem directly. After setting up the Internet connection, please run Windows Update with Windows Firewall on and see how it works. If issue persists, please provide the latest log. If it works, please consider to replace your router or contact the router manufacturer for helps. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

That's food for thought. My ADSL2+ is delivered via Netcomm NB5Plus4 Modem Router. A previous test plugging cable direct into this takes the WAP off the problem list. I am now wondering whether something needs to be done to advanced settings in to Netcomm to overcome the issue. First attempt to get an answer resulted in a request to pay $34. That's unimpressive consumer support from Netcomm.
