7 RC crashes all the time with the dreaded blue screen of death
I'm using an HP Pavilion DV7 Entertainment notebook. I've installed 7 Beta and had NO issues. I installed 7RC and it crashes daily. I have the .dmp files for analysis. HP has nothing to do with 7 yet because its not a GA release. How can I go about diagnosing where the problem is so that i can see if it can even be fixed??? I've looked in the event logs, temp folder under my user name, .dmp file, looked at installed apps, the antivirus (Kaspersky), +++. I use predominantly MS apps. there are a few non native Microsoft apps such as Nero 9, Kaspersky, Blackberry Desktop, etc. any suggestions???

STRATTECH,It would be a good start if you posted what the 'Blue Screen' error(s) says. Also if you could post some information about your hardware, it would help.

Hello STRATTECH,This is not expressly stated in the error above but as you listed non-Microsoft apps I have personally had some issues with Blackberry Desktop Manager and Kaspersky crashing and causing BSODs.-Scott

So far when I've had these issues it was because of memory errors, seems 7 and vista are alot more sensitive to bad memory, Had one that Memtest86 did not find the errors right away, but fortunately I have another memory diagnostic program that did find the bad stick. so far that computer has not crashed again with just the one stick in it, still testing till the other comes back from RMA.I do have another that has crashed once from a kernel power error, but have not found out if it was just a power surge or something else yet, so far the memory in it has passed with no errors. and has not had another crash. But I don't have any antivirus or any other nonMS programs running in the background yet. except ATI CCC.

STRATTECH,Have you downloaded and installed any of the HP drivers in compatibility mode, or just let Windows update handle it for you?Was this an upgrade or clean install (both with beta and RC)?Have you checked for a BIOS update? Also, have you checked the action center to see if there are any messages?

Sorry for the delay - vacation!!dwolters,I downloaded and installed the VISTA 64bit drivers from HP. It was a clean install of RC1 (formattted and completely rebuilt the drive), I'm also completely up to date with the BIOS - ver F2A - and the only action centre messages were from Backups and turning on the FW. I also did another test. I uninstalled Kasperky. The crashes seemed to halt. I also called Kaspersky and they are very tightlipped about any supprt for 7. There only comment was that they would be ready on October 22 when the GA version hits the streets.- STRATTECH

As regarding testing out Anti-Virus and finding the right one to work well in Win7. I first tried Kasperky V8.0 Beta, which is one of the recommends from Microsoft List, and also I noticed from the action centre messages, that it was not supported. And also on the diagnostic tool, of Windows 7 showing a report, about the boot sector problems! Which it gave me trouble opening the I.E.8, crashing it as well. I got not much suppot from Kasperky Lab about this issue, as they say it is only a beta and still under test! - Then I tried out Panda Pro. Again the same action centre messages, that it was not supported. So from there I started to hunt around and see what others recommend. I found from others that the best one was: ESET NOD32 Antivirus! - Which gave me no problems at all and also it is not on recommend Microsoft List!

- ALL,I uninstalled Kaspersky and the Blackberry desktop. The crashes seemed to stop however, I've reinstalled Kaspersky. Still no crashes now after about a week of contstant use. I'm going to try to reinstall the BB Desktop to see if that was the culprit. I was using that latest ver 470_b05 Multilanguage that was published on the BB site.-STRATTECH
