651 Error, connection drops frequently
When I connect to my broadband via a PPPOE connection, I get a 651 error. After trying to reconnect for 25-30 minutes I get connected again successfully. However the connection again drops and gives me the 651 error. This cycle goes on and the connection always drops after sometime. I have been using my router/lan card with Windows XP for several years, without any issues but have recently changed over to Windows 7. I know this error is being faced by several people all over the world. I would like to know if there is a WORKING fix available which corrects this problem totally. My environment: 1) Windows 7 Professional 32 bit licensed 2) I connect to my Internet provider using a PPPOE connection using a user and password 3) I have a wireless router 4) I do not have Microsoft virtual PC / virtual box installed 5) I do not want to have an always on connection. The steps I have ALREADY tried, without success: 1) Disabling the firewall and then connecting. No difference 2) Overwriting the Raspppoe.sys in my system with the Raspppoe.sys from the windowsitreference link (given in a response to one of the questions in this forum) . This works temporarily however after you reboot you get a new error 797 PLEASE HELP. I am really frustrated.

Good day , I would recommend trying to change the following setting as it seems you have a Demand Dial connection setup. Under the Properties of the connection ensure that Idle Time Before Hanging Up is Never . Do you connect via network cable or via wireless? If so did you use the same wireless network adapter previously? Is your Windows 7 updated completely?MCP, MCSE, MCDST, MCSA, MCT, MCITP:EA, MCITP:CST, A+, N+, CTT+, MCTS, CBP

Good day Tim. The value for the "idle time before hanging up" is set to never. I connect via wireless. Yes, I did use the same network adapter previously. My windows 7 is also updated with the latest updates. One more piece of info: I know other people who have the same OS/Lan Card etc, and connect via PPPOE, but they have not faced this issue!

Hi sorry for the delayed reply, I am sure that you are pulling your hair out with frustration. I came across that problem with Win 7 RC1 if I remember correctly. The only solution I came across was to wait for the full release. My issue was slightly different to what you are experiencing. I would try the following: Open Device Manager and expand Network Adapters and right click -> Properties then select Power Management and untick all of these. Is the router itself resetting at all or is there still line sync even when it drops? You must ensure that its OS related and not maybe a hardware issue. With trying that please let me know what the outcome isMCP, MCSE, MCDST, MCSA, MCT, MCITP:EA, MCITP:CST, A+, N+, CTT+, MCTS, CBP

Thanks Tim. Really appreciate your suggestion. I will try out your suggestion and post my result (am currently in office) No, the router is not resetting, though the ADSL light blinks. I dont think it is a hardware issue as the same router was working fine with XP, also the error code thrown is always 651

Furthermore I have found this that you can possibly try some of the steps http://ghost301tech.wordpress.com/2009/10/29/error-651-in-windows-7-a-killer-for-internet-connectionvpn/ I cannot verify this site at all and please use it at your own precautions. From what I have read its pretty accurate and spot on with what you can try.MCP, MCSE, MCDST, MCSA, MCT, MCITP:EA, MCITP:CST, A+, N+, CTT+, MCTS, CBP

Hi Tim, Sorry for the delay in responding back.. I tried the suggestions given in the wordpress link and one in your post above, however they do not work for me. Even if I got connected, it used to drop immediately. And when I reconnected, i got the 651 error. I then connected via the router always on option. This works. Does this mean there is no fixed solution for this? (thru PPPOE) I am sure there are several people facing this error throughout the world. Is MS investigating the issue? Is a fix coming out?

I recently purchased two laptops with windows 7, also installed ethernet cabling for additional laptops, but the two with "Premium" edition of windows 7 continually get the 651 error. however, I have a "Enterprise" edition of windows 7 on a third laptop that works fine. What is the difference, or has this finally been patched by Microsoft? There are absolutely no issues with wireless, however, you must stay close to the modem. Any updates to this issue? Thanks

I was able to solve this issue (rather circumvent it) by updating the settings on my router, so that it is "Always On". I could not find any fix for the problem. The suggestions provide on this thread, did not work for me. I would suggest you to go for an "Always on" connection
