I have a new laptop with Windows 7 and an old PC with Home XP I have just installed a netgeat Wirekess router. I can get the internet on the laptop, set the share as the tutorial and set the pass word, set the workgroup the same, the PC c drive & printer is set to share. Question both the PC & Laptop do not see each other.Please help.61Phil

to cbobbsI am sorry ref the email I sent you !!!I get to the part that I have set the Turn on Password Protect sharing .Then I have to create a password. This is where I get lost ? On which computer = the PC or the Laptop ? and how do I set a password ?I think from what I have read on Microsoft + others that this is my problem ??? Pass words ???I need step by step help PLEASE !! though this process.I gave the network a password when I set the Netgear router up that came with the router = set up disc, and a name to the network. Hi, To troubleshoot the issue, I suggest you perform the following steps. 1. Assure the two machines are in the same group. I assume the group name is WORKGROUP. 2. Temporarily disable firewall on each machine. 3. Install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder package on Windows XP machine from the link below: Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder package 4. Enable "Simple File Sharing" option and Guest account on Windows XP machine. 5. Assure the following services are started on each machine: Computer Browser, Server, Workstation. To verify service, please refer to following article: Verify System Services 6. Modify relevant settings on Windows 7 machine. This is only for test and please assure to select "turn off Password Protected Sharing" currently. When the machines can be accessed each other, we can change the settings again. a. Click Start and open Control Panel. b. Open "Network and Sharing Center" and click "Advanced sharing settings". c. Expand the current network profile (such as "Home or Work"), and then select the following options: "Turn on Network Discovery", "Turn on file and printer sharing", "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders", "Turn off password protected sharing" If the machines still cannot be accessed each other, I suggest you try following steps. 7. Hi NovakI followed your instructions but I was not sure whether I disabled the laptop firewall as the installed soft wear was being managed by the vendor pplication. ( this is on the laptop ).I switch the XP machine off as instructed On the laptop it said that the fire wall was connected, I also tryed to down load the LLTD from the link, The down load did not take oplace as I had a new verstion ?????? and it was aleady installed / not needed ???I continued with your instruction evan to the point = click start on the Windowas 7 machine and typew in XP machine name Still they can not see each other ?????Help Please !!!

Hi Phil, you're not paying attention to details ;) the LLTD is to be downloaded to your XP machine and installed there, Novak was very specific in his instructions and I think that's where you went wrong on the tutorial I posted above - going to edit it to just show a link to go to. HiI still can not switch off the firewall on the Laptop ???? the 60 day trail = anti virus, anti every thing is not leting me ???? The soft wear name = McAfee Security On the firewall control panel it tells me = THESE SETTINGS ARE BEING MANAGED BY VENDOR APPLICATION McAFEE Personal Firewall.+Since the last time I tried to down load the LLTD = Switching of fthe PCs firewall ( I have switched it back on !!! ) whan ever I switch the PC on I get a little ballon message in the bottom right of the screen Windows security center has not detected an anti virus softwear andd your computer may be at risk.????????What have I done ?????Am I going to get a virus ???I pay a independant company in the USA ( name ??? No worries Phil, message(s) are normal is just that the Windows firewall doesn't know what Antivirus program you have install and that's the reason for hte ballon. (I just turn it off in Windows Security) I've personally never cared for McAfee Security (nor Norton for that matter but I do like their AV products). To make it easier on those of us reading your posts though, would you refer to the machines as XP or Windows 7 (so we don't have figure out what the PC is). Please don't give up, but we do understand your frustration as it can be a big learning curve. Ok, Laptop is Windows 7Pc is XPOn the Windows 7 machine, go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, anything McAfee just select it and on that top menu, Uninstall can now be chosen. Since this is trailware, you will at some point need to either purchase an Antivirus program or use the FREE Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 from here http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ Once all McAfee products are gone, you shouldn't have to deal with its setup (although several people do like it) XP Machine - For the LLTD responder, I would use the XP machine to download the software and install it there - after all right now the problem might be there. To see if the XP machine does have the LLTD responsder installed, just go to control panel, right click Network Connections, Local Area Connection and right click it and select Properties. Does it show Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder. If it does, and the box is checked, then no need to download LLTD as its installed.So lets go that far and see where we are at. Phil, don't do more than we ask now ;) We're are concentrating on your XP machine. If it did not have Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder in the properties of the network devices, and you have SP3 installed, then you'll need to download and install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder package that Novak pointed you to. After installing - recheck and see if the Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder is now showing in your network device properties. If it isn't then you'll need to go here http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=922120&kbln=en-us to ask for and obtain the hotfix - you will get an email with the link to it (could be attached, I can't remember) as I had to do that to my XP machine myself, which fixes the problem. After a reboot, my Windows 7 machines could then see the XP machine in the Network Map. Lets get that part done before we proceed any further. You only have to disable the firewall on the XP machine during the install. Now Phil, I still strongly suggest you get local help from somebody to assist you because you need to follow directions closely and understand what it is we need you to do. Your technical skills are lacking and it's very hard to give someone a step by step guide in the forums. We generally give you the information and leave it to the reader to read and reread the instructions. Just wanted to make you aware of that, ok. Is there anyone at all local? Contact a local college/university if necessary like their technology center who might want to do this as a small project. For somebody who know's what to do, it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes tops, but 4 hours if they take the time to explain it as they go :) My advice would be to pay somebody (if that's possible) to come to your home and do this and document it for you (or you take very good notes as to the network setup). I'm glad you're not giving up though, so hang in there.If you seen my head, you'd know it can be very frustrating at times - course I don't have any more hair to pull out, only had 10 heart surgeries and a stroke in the last 10 years (see what computer work can sometimes do) :) Just think of my old days when we had to configure every piece of equipment with jumpers for com ports, dma channels, LTP ports, hard drives and controller cards, even jumpers on the motherboards for EVERYTHING - just ask Bubbapcguy, I know he's been there to as well as several others - its a STEEP learning curve until you learn the basic troubleshooting steeps and learn how to use key words when you search for information.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Sure, and I think the college you're going to will have resources who can probably and most likely will help you. Just contact the IT dept (instructor or whoever is in charge of the teaching IT dept). I guarantee you that if you're patient and insistent, you WILL win :) I was in your shoes a long time ago (when I bought my 1st IBM pc compatible many years ago) and in 7 months I was helping them build pc's, within 2 years of that, I was working networks (better than getting shot at and fighting drunks or crazy people). Don't give in too quick to paying a company, but ONLY if you feel its your last resort, because unless you're really lucky, you won't learn a thing from them :) Find say a 2nd year student who'll work cheap, or if it was like a college I went to, they have a bullentin board in which poeple post their computer services (students looking for work) or those like you looking for someone to help. I think now though you're better prepared to ask the right questions to find the right person to help you, even if it costs you a little. Good luck Phil. Hello BothWednesday 20th 8.45pmYesterday evening at College I asked my tutor for his help or if there was any waythat the college could help / guide me He looked as confused as I am. He knows nothing about networking ! nor windows 7.He did not no what the LLTD etc was or ment as he had not set up a network.This evening he had asked the Teck boys from the IT maintance dept with in the college during the day for me, they told him / me as long as the IP address is the same there should be no problem with shareing over my router / network I was also told that if i right click on the folder I want to share than left click share I can set that folder to share over the network.I have the same IP address !! I also tried the folder share !NO GO !I must admit even with my limited knollage that if the two machins = Home XP & windows 7 don't see Each other = not on the network then how can they share ???Thus I am back at where I was = Square 1 and still hoplesely lost.I think my only option now is to pay a geek to help me if I can find one + whether I have the cash ???I will keep you posted.ThanksPhil

If so move on to the next step.Next step is do the same on the win 7 box (type in the win 7 ip address in the seach box)does it open and show the shares?? If so move on to the next step.on the xp box go to start run and type in the \\ip_address of the win 7 box use the REAL ip of the win 7 boxdoes it open and show the shares?? BubbapcguySir.I hope I have done thid correctly as pre your indstructions.I went to the X[ machine first and typed in the run box from the start botton = ipconfig /all . and then clicked on run.A black square window appeared on screen for about a second and then disappeared.I all so did the same on the Windows 7 machine the same happened again the box lasted for the same time a second or so.I hope that this is OK so far ????Please advisePhil

A new Sq ( small ) window it said.THE NETWORK PATH WAS NOT FOUNDI also did this on the Windows 7 machineI found the IP address but after the numbers it had = (Preferred) in writingFrist I type in the number . it opened the Network cntroll window.There is one folder in this window = Names... it has a green & silver T under it.I aslo tried the number with (Preferred) after the number.A new window = Network Error.Window cannot access.I hope I have go it wright ?Thank you very much.Phil

I forgat to tell you that the two numbers are not the same ?XP Machine ends with .1.3Windows 7 Machine ends with .1.2(Preferred)

You really need someone with as least some computer skills to help.as cdobbs said. only do what you are told.you do not add the (preferred)so on the XP box if you type in the run box \\192.168.1.3 and press enter you getTHE NETWORK PATH WAS NOT FOUNDand the same on the win 7 box then you have not setup sharing at all or you have firewall in play.You need to get help.
