3 windows 7 computers, 1 can't connect to internet
I recently installed Windows 7 on all three of my computers (two desktops and a laptop). All three worked without any problems for a few days, then randomly after restarting one of my desktops today, it is no longer able to connect to the internet, and can't even detect my router even though my other two computers are connected. I've spent many hours looking up solutions on the internet, I've tried all of them, and none have worked. The error message that comes up when I try to connect says "doesn't have a valid IP configuration", so I manually set one. It still didn't fix my problem. I've tried restoring, rebooting, reseting my router... nothing has worked.

I currently have my desktop connected directly to my laptop since the laptop can connect to the internet, but it still shows my desktop on "Unidentified Network". If I look in the "NETGEAR" network on my laptop, I can see my desktop.

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to confirm how the computers are connected to the Internet. Is the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) used? To troubleshoot this issue, please refer to the following steps: Reinstall driver ============== 1. Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter. 2. Double click to expand "Network adapters". 3. Right click your network card and click Uninstall. 4. Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK. 5. Restart the computer If the issue persists, please check if the solutions on the following thread work: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/2c0af923-24bb-4de2-95a7-9a9d4f64a8b0 Hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to confirm how the computers are connected to the Internet. Is the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) used? It was when I was testing to see if my desktop could connect to my router through the laptop, but that's not my normal configuration. My normal config is an ethernet cable going from my desktop to my router, and my laptop is usually wireless. And I have reinstalled the drivers numerous times, still no luck. I will check that thread for a solution and reply here after. EDIT: I've already done everything suggested in that thread, none of them fixed my problem. My desktop can still only find "Unidentified network".

I've managed to connect both my desktop and my laptop to the same homegroup, yet they appear to be on different networks. My laptop is on "NETGEAR" (the correct network), and my desktop is on "Unidentified network". I am able to transfer files between both, yet my desktop is still not able to connect to the internet.

Hi, I would like to know if you still receive the "doesn't have a valid IP configuration" error. Please help capturing the following information and I will check it: netmon Log ============== 1.Download the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3. 2. Install the network monitor on the Windows 7 computer and start to capture. 3.Type the following commands and press Enter at the end of each line: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew 4.After the issue occurs (the computer fails to get a correct IP Address), stop capturing and save the netmon trace file. Collect IP information ============== 1. Click Start Menu, type "cmd" in the Start Search box. 2. Right-click the exe file and choose "run as administrator". 3. Input the following commands in the DOS prompt window and press ENTER at the end of each line: IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\IP.TXT 6. Go to C drive, find out the IP.TXT file. System Information ============= 1. Click the Start Button, type "MSINFO32" in the Start Search box and press Enter to start the System Information. 2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose NFO as "Save as type", click Desktop on the left pane, and click Save. (If the Desktop option is not available, please click Browse Folder button first.) 3. Go to the Desktop, right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder". Upload this file and let me know the link Please upload the 3 files to Windows Live SkyDrive and share its URL with us.Vivian Xing - MSFT
