2 instances of IE8 32 bit running?
2 instances of IE8 32 bit are running in Task Manager Processes although only one instance of IE is open. MyOS is Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Sometimes I can run Task Manager and find 5 or 6 instances running. When all these processes are runningand Itry to 'end process' on some of them I'm told 'access is denied.' This really POs me. I use the application 'putty' a lot for my website. It's not even running but processes reports it. 'Access is denied' when I try to 'end process.' What's going on? Thanks a lot for any information on this.

Every tab gets its own instance now.from a quick internet search..."It's by design with IE8. One process is for the program and one is for the tab loaded. This has to with the tab recovery feature they added which prevents the whole app from crashing based on one page allowing you to continue to use the other tabs. "

Thanks for the reply and information, Proton. My main problem from the original post.....Sometimes I can run Task Manager and find 5 or 6 instances running. When all these processes are runningand Itry to 'end process' on some of them I'm told 'access is denied.' This happens, at times, that IE is not even open. Why is access denied? It's my computer, I'm administrator and I want them stopped! And why are these running when IE is not even open. Thanks again.

Hi, As Proton2 said, IE tabs are isolated from the frame, and are located in separate processes. So, it is normal there are 5 or 6 instances running. According to my test, these processes can be ended and the related page will refresh. As for the issue you encountered, I would like to confirm if you can end some of the IE process. To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest temporarily turning off UAC: 1. Click the Start Button, type "User account control" and press Enter. 2. When the User account control settings box appears, move the slider to Never notify. 3. Click OK. If the issue persists, try creating a new account: Create a new user account ==================== 1. Click the Start Button, type User Accounts in the start search pane and press Enter. 2. Click Manage use accounts. 3. Click Create a new account, and type the name. 4. Choose account type as Computer administrator. 5. Click Create Account. 6. Log off and log on with the new account. Vivian Xing - MSFT

Same 2 instances for Google Chrome as for I.E. 32 & 64 bit browsers & Windows 7OSs. However Safari only uses one space in Windows 7 32 & 64.As for tabbed browsing, I never saw any reason for it and do not use it. Safari is fast.

IE8 is not running now and one process of it is listed in Task Manager. If I try to 'end process' I'm given an 'access is denied' message. I tried 'pskill' and get same message. I ran it as admin. I tried procexp.exe and get same message. Can someone tell me what is happening? And why can't I close IE8 entirely? This happens with other apps as well. GoogleUpdate.exe will not close, no matter what I do. Is it Windows 7? I'd like to close these programs and think I should be able to at my discretion. Thanks.

Please note that IE8 is NOT OPEN when the above happens. Also I noticed that the listing in Task Manager, when this happens, is iexplore.exe.The normal listing is iexplore.exe *32. Microsoft????? Anyone else have this problem????

I uninstalled an M-Audio beta driver and Webroot AV and so far, it's working. No reoccurences of my complaint. My computer was acting weird in other ways as well.Example, I have a wireless USB adapter and lately I've getting messages that it would work better if I use a USB 2.0 port.Everything on my computer is USB 2.0. Then I get disconnected. Usually restarting the machine fixes everything for awhile. But I was sick of restarting. Also, my sound kept going out. IE8 crashed a lot as well. Control Panel would open but no icons, empty. Same with 'My Computer.' MS Security Essentialsreported no viruses/adware so I figured I wouldtry some drivers. So far so good. It's been about a whole day without any reoccurences. Knock on wood. Thanks for the replies.

Gonzo - Safari may be fast, but it's also the least secure. Just think back to the last CanSecWest "Pwn2Own" contest. The Mac was "pwned" (read comprominsed) in under 2 minutes due to a Safari issue - twice, in the past 2 years. While it wasn't running on Windows, if I recall correctly, Charlie Miller - the guy who hacked the Mac on both occasions said the vulnerability was also in the Windows version.Somehow, I don't think Apple takes Security very seriously. You'd be better off with Chrome - Same webkit based browser, but fewer vulnerabilities.
