2 Vista PC's will not connect RDP but XP to Vista will
Hello all, this is my firs post and contrary to what others have saidnegative about Vista, I love it. Now to my current issues and I hope someone can help me out. I have loadedVista Beta IIon3 test machines, 2 on the same network (home) and1 on an offsite (work) location. The3 Vista PC's will not connect Via Remote Desktop even though the credentials are correctbut any of my other Win XP/2003 Servermachines can connect toany of3 Vista machines. The error I get trying to connect Vista to Vista is incorrect credentials. But they are in fact correct b/c I can connect via XP/2003to Vista and Vistato XP/2003 Also possibly related is the home main test Vista machine has a Samsung ML2010 laser printer. I can print to the Vista machine via XP>Vista, but if I try and print Vista>Vista it fails and the error in the network is permission denied even though I have print sharing enabled and the credentials are set to "everyone". I do not understand if Microsoft wants us to test and report issues why can't we use 2 Vista machines to interact? Makes no sence to me. Anyone have any advise would be greatly aprreciated.

I am going to take a guess here. Are you logging on using the UPN on Vista? If not, you are *probably* using a local account. If the local account has the same name and password as the domain account XP will use pass thru authentication and you will still get access. I am not sure, but I do not think that Vista will use pass thru authentication in that way. This could explain why Vista to Vista connectons are failing.

The local account does not have the same name and password as the Domain account. I am not sure what "UPN" is but could you suggest a way to get them to connect? Thank for the responce.

I am at a loss. Try using the UPN just for the heck of it. Log on as userLogOnName@DomainName.DomainSuffix. Thoses are replaceable variables. I am assuming that the computers are in the same domain.

Marc, have you looked at the security event logs see where it is failing? I just ran a test and was able to remote desktop from one vista to another. (both machines are on the same domain and the domain user is in both administrator groups.)

I also have this problem, the security log output I get Event ID: 4625, suggests in my case when I attempt to login from home with Vista Enterprise to Work PC with Vista Enterprise that a Network Login is being attempted, but fails because the user in question has not been granted Access the Computer over the Network permission. Which is indeed true, Only Administrators, Power Users, and Backup Operators have this right by default. Ideally, I'd like to just add the domain\user to have the right, but Vista puts the clamp on making changes to this particular Policy object. I suspect there is a way, but haveyet toresearch the options for doing so. The account I am using (via Remote Desktop Connections)from home is the same domain account I use daily to perform work tasks, it is not a member of any of the groups listed above. I've tried supplying domain\user user@domainformatted credentials, both error outthe same way andlogEventID: 4625 If I add the domain\user to Admin for example, Remote Desktop Connections succeed but I don't want this account to be an Admin! ! The domain\user in question is a member of Remote Desktop Users on the Work PC, but that doesn't matter in my situation. I am going to add domain\user to Backup Operators on the Work PC, if to nothing else provide the domain\user the right to Access the Computer over the Network, without adding full Admin access. It should be noted that the EventID: 4625 also throws information into the mix that troubles me. Security ID: NULL SID. I've had others test RDC connections from home to work, for what its worth I'm the only one wrestling this. j a c k

Follow up- Adding domain\user to the Backup Operators group on RDP target Vista PC allowes desiredRDP access. I'm pleased to have access from my Home Vista PC to Work Vista PC, but I am not pleased that normal practices of adding domain\user to Remote Desktop Users does not provide the desired access on target machine. j a c k

Lets put a hypothetical here. I have 2 RTM Vista build systems. No Domain ( I currently can't afford a server at home, boss supplied licenses for vista on lappy and home system) I have the same problem, I can't RDP from vista on my laptop to Vista on my normal system, HOWEVER I can RDP from my home PC TO Vista ??!?! XP to my home PC does work. For the purposes of elimination I turned off the firewall completely and no connection. RDP is failing stating that I have incorrect credentials, even though I have double checked the user names and passwords completely.
