127.0.0.1 works, but no ipconfig data
after a fresh install of xp pro, our tcp/ip seams broken. i can ping 127.0.0.1 or localhost, but nothing else. when i enter ipconfig /all at the command line all i get is "windows ip configuration" and no data whatsoever, not even a bunch of 0s.I have reloaded nettcpip.inf from an xp disk, the problem computers 'c' drive, and a flash drive copy of a working computers .inf. Restated after each try. I have tried the automated 'fix-it' 50199. I have run "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" from the command prompt as well, and also tried calling it 'reset.log' as well, or calling it c:\resetlog.txt but no log or text file is created. Before i installed xp pro the box had xp home on it and was working fine (just needed to have pro for our workgroup).this is a fresh install, so there is no antivirus etc. firewall is turned off. i tried turning off 'ipsec' service in services menu. there is no 'ip helper' or something to that effect that another help page mentioned.the network adapter is part of the motherboard. when right clicking the 1394 connection and clicking repair i get the error "failed to query tcp/ip settings of the connection. cannot proceed". any help is much appriciated.ben

After you install an operating system you must then install drivers for all your hardware. It sounds like you forgot to do this.Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:1. The device mftr.'s website; OR2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers. To find out what hardware is in your computer:1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor or System Information for Windows.http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisorhttp://www.gtopala.com/ - System Information for WindowsMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

HiJust adding a little to the good advice above.1394 is Not a regular network connection it is the Firewire connector.I.e., you do not have regular installation of Network Card.As suggested above get the drivers from the original vendor, make sure that the LAN card is enabled in the Motherboard BIOS, and install the drivers.Check for Ghost installation too in case the Device Manager needs a cleanup.http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#ghostJack, MVP-Networking.
