10 Minute login to domain for admin accounts
We're getting ready to start deploying Windows 7 machines in our labs at a local community college. When setting up test machines I run in to an odd problem. Before attaching the computer to the domain logins are normal (couple seconds). After attaching the computer to the domain, non admin accounts (students) will do the normal couple minutes for initial setup, and then will log in as normal on subsequent logins. When logging in with an account with admin privileges (lab workers to full blown admins) I get a long log in time. Initial log in is the same as any other account, but the subsequent logins take exactly 10 minutes to log in. Once logged in they can access all the network shares and perform as normal. While this wouldn't be a huge issue if it was just one or two logins a day, there are times I have to log in to 30+ computers to resolve an issue/install software/etc. Suddenly 10min per login becomes a problem. We ran in to this problem with Windows Vista, but found an update (Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows Vista (KB943729)) to be the culprit. I've found this login issue is present with our without updates to Windows 7. Can anyone help?

Could this be related to a policy being applied for this group of users? Does this happen when the lab workers & full blown admins log on to non-lab equipment? Start with a gpresult and see if there is anything that stands out. I assume that if you pull the network cable and log in with cached credentials, the login in will be quick... The startup process will be recorded into the following log in Event Log: Application and service logs/Microsoft/Windows/Diagnostics-Performance/Operational Please specially check logs which have event ID 100 and 101. These are for boot performance monitoring. Sorry for lagging on getting back on answers. I should be able to get my hands back on the test machine on Monday so I'll post up the logs.

Jm, the only time the logins have the delay is when users with elevated privileges log on. So lab workers and admins. Students accounts and teacher accounts don't seem to have the issues. I'll fire up a gpresult and see if anything stands out. And as for the network cable thing, I've only tried local log ins, not cached logins, I'll give that a shot and see.
