0xc0e error in Windows 8.1

Hi, Ive been given a PC which will not boot, the error is as the title. Ive tried the bootrec /rebuildbcd but I get a message saying 'the requested system device cannot be found', there is only 1 hdd in the pc so im stumped as to why it cannot rebuild the bcd but it knows there is a Windows installation there.

Does anyone have an idea what might be going on here?

I cloned the drive and tried to reinstall the OS via the recovery disc with the aim to copy all the start up files and insert them onto the main drive using Linux but when I tried to install win 8 it said it cannot be installed on a GPT disc. Win 8 is on the original disc which is classed as a GPT. would I need to erase the disc, install Win 8 via MBR then convert it to GPT?

Regards

Hi Darren,

Could you let us know what's the edition of Windows on your computer now?

We could follow this article to repair the startup issue:

Use Bootrec.exe in the Windows RE to troubleshoot startup issues

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392?wa=wsignin1.0

If it doesn't resolve and you use the media to do a new installation of Windows 81, we need to know that when

installing Windows on UEFI-based PCs using Windows Setup, your hard drive partition style must be set up to support either UEFI mode or legacy BIOS-compatibility mode.

For more information, please read this article:

Hi Karen, I have tried the bootrec.exe tool and on the final command I get 'the requested system device cannot be found'.

Next I tried 'bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup' command but then I get 'the requested system device cannot be found'

There is only one hdd in the machine and the bootrec.exe tool knows where C:\Windows is.

Im stumped by this. I could do a fresh install but id prefer not to due to the time it will take to set it up how it currently is.

Darren,

Add the specific path to have try:

bcdboot.exe c:\windows /s c

If the issue persists, it might be your hardware issue. Check your BIOS disk mode setting.

Thanks Karen, its still not playing ball. Ive been through the BIOS, changed everything relating to the HDD in a trial and error basis but still getting the same error. im assuming its a locked drive perhaps.

Darren,

If it's locked, it would prompt some related information.

Run bootrec /ScanOs command to see if it could find the system.

And insert this disk to another computer to see if there is Windows information on it. I even suspect there is no system information on it.
