0x80780119 error wile trying to create an image on my external hard drive
I have a 250 GB external hard drive formatted to NTFS that has over 140 GB free on it. The drive I am trying to create an image of is a 500 GB internal hard drive formatted to NTFS as well. When I start the imaging process with the backup and restore program it tells me thatthe imageis going to be 29 GB in size. Once started I wait about 10 to 15 minutes later and the program gives me the error 0x80780119. I have a screen shot of the error and also all of the information that you will need to understand the problem.

All the posts I've seen for this problem indicate lack of space on a drive somewhere, and not necessarily where you think it matters. Read through some of this Google hits to see what I mean. Maybe they will give you a clue as to where to look: backup error 0x80780119

I agree the error code is caused by not enough Space to create the Shadow Copy. By the way, I found a similar issue has been posted already. You can refer to the following link: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/894f0901-811d-4270-955e-2962c2a4bc4d Thanks, I hope this can help you.John Zhu

In addition, when you narrow down to the second condition, if our system is 32 bit Windows 7, you should try the following steps to register related dll files. (you can ignore error messages if there is any)cd /d %windir%\system32Net stop vssNet stop swprvregsvr32 ole32.dllregsvr32 vss_ps.dllregsvr32 es.dllregsvr32 stdprov.dllregsvr32 msxml3.dllregsvr32 msxml.dllregsvr32 msxml4.dll For Windows x64 bit we should replace c:\windows\system32 with c:\windows\SysWOW64 and execute the following command: regsvr32 ole32.dllregsvr32 vss_ps.dllregsvr32 es.dllregsvr32 stdprov.dllregsvr32 msxml3.dllregsvr32 msxml.dllregsvr32 msxml4.dll

Hi, I would like to verify how the external hard drive is connected. It should be the disk space problem because the original hard drive is 500GB.Vivian Xing - MSFT

It is connected by USB. I just installed windows 7 by reformatting the drive. Does it matter that the drive that I am trying to image is 500 GB and the external hard drive is 250? I noticed that all the other people have a partition in the OS carrying drive that is 100 MB, and I have the same thing. Is the image creating program in windows 7 always tries to backup the image on that partition? Because when I start the image process, I have the choice to backup to the USB drive and I choose that. Is it really a registry problem because I am a little hesitant to change anything there.

Hi, I suggest performing the above steps first. It will re-register the backup files. If the issue persists, it should be the disk space problem. When backup, some files are compressed but some files cannot. So, it is hard to determine if a 250GB hard drive is enough for backup 500GB hard drive. To check if its the hard drive problem, you can try backup files instead of the system image to check if the same error appears. Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hi everybody, I had the exact same error and none of the steps above worked for me. When you create a system image it also takes the hidden System Reserved partition with it like you may have already noticed. Then I noticed that partition used like 62MB of 100MB. The error says: partition of less dan 500MB needs 50MB of free space! So this is the only solution that worked for me: With partition manager I took about 100MB of my C-drive as space before. Then I resized the hidden system reserved with the 100MB extra. Restart PC, let partition manager do the work and you're done! The System Reserved partition now uses 62MB of 200MB and creating system images works again!

Hi,This error occurs when the System reserved partition (100 MB) has less space. Extending the partition is the solution. If Disk management does not let you do it because of lack of contiguous space, please follow the steps that I have mentioned in this thread. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/fce6950d-c06d-4dd0-a850-67022db4fe04/Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]
