.URL Files with Favicons cause roaming profile corruption with Windows XP.
We recently migrated our user profiles to a Windows 2008 server. We used Backup Exec to backup the data from the old server, and restore it to the new one overnight. We then updated the group policy for redirected folders, and updated their profile locations to the new server. All seemed well until we started to get some people who could only log in with temporary profiles. Windows was unable to copy some of the users favorites files when logging on, from the server to the local copy of the profile. (Example error below)1509,ERROR,Userenv,Tue Aug 24 13:39:54 2010,DOMAIN\username, \\server\staff_profiles\%USERNAME%\Favorites\Travel\National Rail Enquiries - Official source for rail information, UK train times and timetables.url C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Favorites\Travel\National Rail Enquiries - Official source for rail information, UK train times and timetables.url The system cannot find the file specified. This appears to happen with favorites files that have a Favicon (using NTFS-ADS).If I remove the Favicon or delete the favorite, then the profile loads normally. However, these files can be copied back to the profile upon log off and cause the same issue next time. Normally, it is Internet Explorers own Suggested Sites.url that causes the issue, but sometimes it can be any of their favorites, old or new, even if they didn't cause an issue at the previous logon.Does anyone have an idea on what to do to solve this? I have stopped allowing people to logon with temp profiles (as the settings are all mucked up). Ideally I would like to keep favorites as part of their roaming profiles, but that might have to be the last resort!1 person needs an answerI do too
