.NET Applications crash with access violation in mscorwks.dll 2.0.50727.5448
Hi, I have a problem with a Win7 x64 machine and .NET 2.0. There is a bunch of applications using mscorwks.dll ver. 2.0.50727.5448 that crash consistently. The problem occurs in nearly all of the pre-installed Lenovo cpl items, but also in 3rd party tools like the Intel SSD toolbox. The error logged looks like <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Application Error" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>100</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2012-04-10T14:40:05.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>18858</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>dudler....</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>Intel SSD Toolbox.exe</Data> <Data>3.0.2.400</Data> <Data>4ef0b1b9</Data> <Data>mscorwks.dll</Data> <Data>2.0.50727.5448</Data> <Data>4e154bce</Data> <Data>c0000005</Data> <Data>000e1bed</Data> </EventData> </Event> The error address is the same for all faulting applications. The machine is fully updated, i.e. Windows Update does not find anything pending, no updates have been hidden. Are there any known issues or hotfixes? What can I do to fix it? Re-installing .NET is not possible as it is part of the OS installation, and I already ran sfc /scannow, which did not resolve the issue. Best regards, Christoph

1. Perhaps this is solution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913384/en-us 2. It seems that the problem is bound to Intel Toolbox. Give a try to Intel Community http://communities.intel.com Regards Milos

Hi Milos, thanks for your answer. 1. Perhaps this is solution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913384/en-us I have tried this, but the Hotfix is not applicable for the machine, i.e. refuses to install. 2. It seems that the problem is bound to Intel Toolbox. Give a try to Intel Community http://communities.intel.com Regards Milos No, it is not. As i stated, the problem affects a variety of .NET programs on the machine. Basically, it is very difficult to start anything on the machine - it is amazing how much software is based on .NET 2.0. I could give you a dozen of similar error messages (all in the same DLL at the same location) from different applications. The Intel tool was just the last of hundreds of messages in the event log... Best regards, Christoph

Hi Christoph, 1. It seems that there will be hard route to find origin of troubles, namely the analysis by Process Monitor (Sysinternals). 2. In my understanding, the problem stems from the fact that .NET is protected by Window File Protection. 3. I do not understand why sfc /scannow gave no results (sorry to ask stupid question - you use elevated rights and log files were clean(?), http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us) 4. If nothing helps, then I would use installation medium, run "install" and use "Upgrade" instead of standard install. Regards Milos

Regards Milos Hi Milos, sfc /scannow did perform some fixes, but the DLL in question was not logged, and the operation did not resolve the issue. At the moment, I also do not see any other possibility than a re-install. Best regards, Christoph

Hi, You could perform In-Place upgrade to repair your system. How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Another suggestion is to reinstall .NET 2.0 and Intel SSD Toolbox. If the issue persists, you may contact Intel for further assistance about Intel SSD Toolbox.

Hi, I finally did an in-place upgrade, which resolved the issue. However, I did not yet re-install the .NET updates. Best regards, Christoph
