*All* of my shortcuts disappeared and I can't create new ones.
Several people have posted about shortcuts disappearing from their desktop, and I've read about System Maintenance deleting broken and unused shortcuts, but I am experiencing something different. I bought a brand new laptop with Windows 7 and have only had it a few weeks. A few days ago, all of the shortcuts on my desktop disappeared. I like an un-cluttered desktop, so it was just shortcuts to my anti-virus and anti-malware software, and the recycle bin. The frustrating thing is that when I try to create new shortcuts, they don't ever appear on the desktop. However, if I go into Windows Explorer and click on "Desktop," it will show me all the shortcuts that are supposed to be on the desktop. This problem developed after I downloaded some software while using an internet connection in a hotel (It was Microsoft Office 2007, which my University allows me to download for free since they have some deal with Microsoft). I have run virus and malware checks, I have checked the display settings, I tried using system restore to go back to the state my computer was in before I downloaded Office, and I still can't get any shortcuts. I don't know if there was something funky about the hotel's internet connection or what to blame it on, but I'd really like some help.

How's going now? Could you get the desktop back after select "show desktop icons"?
