'Windows Help and Support encountered a problem' - Help is no help & broken
Has anyone got or fixed this issue? When you search for a keyword within Win7 Help, the following text is displayed in the Help window: Windows Help and Support encountered a problem You might be able to resolve the problem by restarting Windows Help and Support. If the problem persists, try the following: Search for Help topics online at the Windows website. Contact your computer manufacturer or Microsoft Support for further assistance. There might be a problem with one or more Windows system files or folders on your computer. Thanks, CJSnet

Hi, This issue can be caused by one of the background programs in the system. I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall, then check the result. If the issue persists, try to find the root cause with Clean Boot Mode. How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista The method in the above article also applies in Windows 7 beta. If the issue still occurs, I suspect that components of Help and Support are corrupt. Please try to find some clues in Event Viewer. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Okay, I have tried all of that and no joy. The event viewer also gives no messages for the times when the issue occurs with Help.Is there a relatively simple way to repair my Help files as I do suspect they are corrupt? Can anyone upload the working file(s) I would need to replace in this instance, or can I extract something specific from the DVD? Thanks, CJSnet

Hi, If Help and Support is corrupt, we could only repair it by In-place Upgrade. We are unable to manually repair these components because of permission behaviors. Also we may need to repair from Regsitry. In-place Upgrade is a solid way.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Okay I have now done a full Repair install, and the problem remains :( I think it is more serious than I first thought. I'm surprised more people don't have it. Maybe most here aren't the type to need 'Help'! Any other ideas welcomed. Thanks, CJSnet

Hi, Did you repair the system after boot from the Windows 7 beta DVD, or repair it in the system? I suggest that you boot in the system and run the repair installation. If the issue persists, please let us know if the issue occurs when you just installed the system. If so, there may be some issues when installing. In this case I suggest that you reinstall the system on another partition and see if the issue still occurs. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, thanks for the reply. I did an upgrade reinstall from within Windows 7 itself. On your advice I will attempt the in-system repair (it won't let you do a boot upgrade). The issue did occur from day one of upgrading Vista to Win7, but I will report back after the repair to advise if the issue remains.Do you think the repair will also help with the thumbnails issue detailed here?: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/thread/28d81a6f-c2d9-44d7-9135-1d48a19837c3/ Thanks, CJSnet

Arthur Xie - MSFTOkay, well I looked at the boot DVD and there is no repair install option there. The only repair options are system restore (no good as Help was broken from the start), memory diagnostics, startup repair (Help isn't a startup issue), etc. So I have done everything you said, as the initial repair was conducted "in the system".I am not able to reinstall in another partition, but I can live without Help, in the hope it is fixed in the next beta. Thanks, CJSnet

Hi CJSnet, We find that this is a hot issue in Windows 7 beta. I believe that our developer has noticed that. Arthur Xie - MSFT
