Hi,

I'm sporadically seeing the following error message:

The service 'Software Protection' has a Startup type of 'Automatic (Delayed Start)' and I've already attempted starting it and monitoring. The service goes from running to stopped in a short space of time and doesn't remain started. I'm unable to change the Startup type even using 'Run as administrator' on services.msc.

Potentially the Software Protection service is a red herring.

System:

Windows 8.1 Pro

Office Pro Plus 2013 licensed using MAK

This also occurs on another laptop which has 8.1 and Office 2013 so no point repairing Office / reinstalling etc.

Any help is appreciated.

This issue may be caused by the delay start of the "Software Protection" service.

Have the issue been resolved by restarting  the Software Protection ?

It is a normal symptom.
I have restart this service to make a test and checked the status of it . It will stop automatically as you said.
I checked this operation from the Event Viewer ,it showed me that it will check the status of all the licensing and it will shut down automatically after completing the task.

Restarting the service won`t resolve the issue ,right ?

According to the log you have posted ,the issue seems to be related KB(KB2883036) 32-Bit Edition' could not be installed for office .
If it is possible ,try to download it manually .

In the debugging logs posted ," failed with hresult 0x80072efd".It seems to be related to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update. Please refer to the following links:

Nothing logged in the extended logging so I've gone ahead and attempted a manual install of KB2883036. This fails until you select Run as administrator.

I'll update in a day or two when I can be sure whether this has fixed it or not but for now I'm optimistic!

Is there a way we can flag this to MS - this is I believe the first documented (potential) fix for this issue.
