win2003 vm is running really slow
Hi, I am looking for some tools that either came with w2k3/ w2k8 r2 servers or available for download. The tool need to be able to measure or display to desktop the performace or usage of CPU stress, Ram, Hard disk usage, ect (I can't name them all, but I am sure that you guys know what I am talking about). The reason is, a lot of my VM, which are hosted on a cluster, are sometime become extremely slow; especially via RDP -this does not happen at all time; but there are time where the VM becomes unresonsive. ie. keyboard-strokes and mouse clicking are barely response. I checked the task manager on the VM as well as on the host for cpu/ram usage and it never hit the limit or even close to the limit. it stayed really low. The interesting part here is, on the same cluster, the Linux VM are running normal. Its only the Windows 2003 are slow. So, I am looking for some better tools to measure those components as mentioned above. More or less, I want to use the tool to compare a VM that has the identical components (ie. ram, cpu, ect) to a real machine and to see if the performance and the harware usages are different on the two. Thanks.

Hi Tubong,I would use Microsoft perfmon which has the advance capabilities to monitor cpu, ram , disk , network , .net, process, threads etc...

Thanks, I have already looked at perfmon. However, my knowledge is very limited. I have used most of the counters available although I haven't seen one that can tell me why the VM are running slow. Such as, some type of "clogging" (which I expect to have a huge spike on the output graph). Can you point me to the few/ specific counters that you think it may help me in this case? How can I look for the number of computations per seconds on the memory/ or cpu, ect - if that's possible? Although, I don't mind if there is a different tool.

Hi, If you have performance issue with Windows Server 2003 VM, you don’t need monitor tool. We identified some performance issue cause by CPU, however, the issue is only affect Windows XP, for more information, you can refer to: Slow XP Performance on Hyper-V http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/2adbd836-6224-40b8-9510-5dd814003f99 By the way, did you get the same issue with other VM such as Windows XP, Windows Server 2008? How about to boot the VM into Safe Mode? Best Regards, Vincent Hu

Hi, After using perfmon to logs the performace for a few days and using PAL to analyze the .tsv file obtained from a win2003 sp2 vm, it can only tell me something like this: (not all the time, but it happen a few time). I was only tested on this 1 vm only. note that the interval for the following is within a few hours 3/2/2010 11:19:12 PM Disk responsiveness is very slow (spike of more than 25ms) \\xxxxx\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk sec/Read 0 0.003 0.057 0 note that the interval for the following would be less than 30 minutes. 3/3/2010 11:51:44 AM Average disk responsiveness is very slow - more than 25ms \\xxxxx\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk sec/Read 0.004 0.061 0.119 0 note that the following happen for many hours interval. Decreasing trend of 10MB's per hour \\xxxxx\Memory\Available MBytes My question is : Does the above errors suggest that the disks are slow and could there be memory leak? 1)If you have performance issue with Windows Server 2003 VM, you don’t need monitor tool. >>Reply: What else can I use instead? I think I am really need some thing to help me trouble shoot this. 2)By the way, did you get the same issue with other VM such as Windows XP, Windows Server 2008? >>Reply: Yes, we have a cluster compose of 3 ESX VMWare 3.5. There are many 2003 vm on those ESX that sometime experience slowness. Especially via RDP. 3)How about to boot the VM into Safe Mode? >>Reply: No, I haven't try that. Would that suggest something? PS. One thing I also notice is that, the three ESX are having different hard-drive. ESX1 has: SAS, 300GB, 10k (i am not sure what raid) ESX2 has: SATA, 1TB, 7.2k (not sure raid level) ESX3 has: SAS, 1TB, 7.2K (not sure raid level) My question is: since these three ESX are hosted on a cluster, could there be some kind of latency/ miss-match in response time between these different type of hard disk? Thanks

I recently read some articles about the /3gb switch. Unfortunately, the articles only mention to exchange server. I would like to know if enable the /3gb switch will add any effects (+ve, -ve) to a windows 2003 standard virtual machine? Unfortunately, this isn't an exchange VM. thanks

On a different 2003 vm, i let it stayed ON overnight. This morning, I check the logs and i got the disk Ave. READ/WRITE response time continuously showed VERY LOW RESPONSE TIME OF MORE THAN 25 seconds . To be exact, I'll post it here. Does this mean that the disk is slow? This vm is sitting on a ESX box with x1TB disk raided to a total of 3TB (i am not sure about raid level) SAS, 7.2K. Dell PowerEdge 2950, 8 Intel CPU @3GHZ. This ESX host 36 VMs. This particular vm has 2GB momory and 1 CPU. It is notice that RDP to this vm is experience slowness in term of mouse clicking and keyboard type and as well as tasks takes longer to run too. Time 3/4/2010 4:41:24 PM Condition Counter Min Avg Max Hourly Trend Average disk responsiveness is very slow - more than 25ms \\YYYYY\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg.
