why can't linux clients resolve names?

There are linux client machines on the network that point to a Win 2003 Domain Controller running DHCP for IP addresses. The DHCP server scope is also supposed to inject DNS suffixes to the clients. Apparently it doesn't work for linux clients.
When I check the resolv.conf file I only see "search one.domain"
I enabled DHCP option 119 already and it still doesn't work.

Does your DHCP send the DNS's server to those computer ?

Run a ifconfig on the linux to be sure.

After, try with the short name and the FQDN to isolate if it's a suffix's error.

Let us know the test result!

yes the DHCP scope options do include a option 119 DNS Search List
However it doesn't appear to work, despite the fact that the dhclient is correct version on the linux side

Please post a unedited ifconfig, and one ipconfig /all from a windows client to compare.

Edited; Post a result from that command "cat /etc/resolv.conf"

Very strange symptoms suddenly showing up after the recent upgrade to Windows 2003....
1) linux clients suddenly get their resolv.conf overwritten, losing their dns suffixes
2) sometimes the NetworkManager is responsible for overwriting the resolv.conf. Other times /sbin/dhclient-scripts overwrote it
3) it appears changing something in the scope on the Windows 2003 DHCP server can trigger it
Here is the output from a windows box and a linux box:
