vss system writer - cant add?
Hi:
I've been trying to get the vss writer to show up or enable, but cant seem to get working!
I tried the Info from Article ID: 2009272 "System state backup using Windows Server Backup fails with error: System writer is not found in the backup." no luck.
I tried the steps listed in forum: "VSS System Writer is missing" - by booting up with a clean computer then running the takeown steps, and still no luck!
Can some one help with something I might have missed... Thanks, James

Hi,
See if following article helps in your case
Backup Fails with error message "WMI Writer Missing" in VSSADMIN
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7309.backup-fails-with-error-message-wmi-writer-missing-in-vssadmin.aspx
Steps mentioned in the article should work for "VSS System Writer" as well, if it doesn't then pls create a new thread in Backup sub forum as suggested by Mr X.

Hi Santosh,
The article points to two line items that state "Change to your domain" This is not a Domain Server.
The server name is: server1
The Workgroup is: ABQ
I tried typing both in and get a message invalid parameter "ABQ\domain admins:<RX>""
what am I doing wrong?james luceros

Hello James,
I haven't had that issue on Server which is a part of work group.
You might want to try following however, I am not sure whether that would work
Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /a
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "server1\Administrators:(RX)
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "server1\Users:(RX)
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)
Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)
net stop cryptsvc && net start cryptsvc
net stop vss && net start vss
net stop Winmgmt && net start Winmgmt
Thanks
