Upgrading DC from Windows server 2008 to 2012 has the following steps:

Step 1: preparing your existing forest via adprep command on server 2008

Step 2: promoting Windows server 2012 to be domain controller for the existing forest

Step 3: verify the new Windows server 2012 domain controller

Step 4transferring FSMO role

Step 5: remove Windows 2008 domain controller
