upgrade of server 2003 sp1 to rc2 on a domain controller
HiWe were about to do the move from server 2003 sp1 to RC 2 followed by up update to sp2. I came across this which doesnt make sense on here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/912309. About 2/3 s of the way down it says:"Warning Take standard failure recovery precautions before you try to upgrade Windows. For example, we recommend that you back up a server before you try to upgrade it. We also recommend that you have one or more additional domain controllers online and that you remove Active Directory from the domain controller before you try to upgrade the operating system."It doesnt make sense other stuff weve found says its all ok.help.Norman

It actually suggests you to have a backup of the server to avoid any issues in case of a failure. The reason it recommends having additional domain controllers is that if you have only one domain controller and if you have a failure there would be issues authenticating to the domain while the server is down.If there are still doubts please specify the exact part which does not make sense.

Hello,if you like to upgrade you server you should always have a backup of the server and the data in case something fails, that should be normal for administrators.Especially when you have a domain it is recommended to have at least 2 DC/DNS/GC in case of failures of one machine.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
