when we try to use task manager we get a prompt message saying task manager has been disabled by your administrator. we have only started having this problem and we have tried setting the permission etc even in safe mode but with no luck. can anyone tell us how to fix this as the only option we get when we try to use the disc to repair is to completely reinstall. thanks karen

Is this with Windows Vista or Windows Server "Longhorn"? Is the computer joined to a domain that is managed by Group Policy?

I have the same issue. But just recently (a month ago) reloaded all of my software because my hard drive died. I loaded XP Home edition and upgraded to S2. I also use Broadband, Road Runner. Like others, I'm suspicious I make have downloaded a virus that was not detected by my software because I got a box that looked like a Microsoft Warning that said I was infected with spy ware and to click OK to protect myself. I originally ignored it and tried to close/cancel the box but it would not close and then finally out of frustration I hit OK and it went away. Soon after I noticed that I was getting the 'access denied' message. I wantto see Task Manager again as it tell me what performance is like on my machine and what programs are executing. How can I check to see if I didindeeddownload a malicious program, if its executing and whether my machine has become a host as machine speed seems to have slowed? How canI reactivate the Task Manager?Any suggestions on how to celan the machine would be welcomed, hopefully I don't need it. Thanks. Ken

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555480 These instructions should be followed after your remove any viruses. Note: The 1st part of the RESOLUTION applies only to Windows NT. You will know anyway as when you try and run Gpedit.msc it returns cannot find Gpedit.msc. Go to the 2nd part of the RESOLUTION which is verifying the correct registry entries. I initially had success getting Task Manager back after removing the virus that was infecting my machine; however, after I restarted the computer later the Task Manager was disabled again. The trick is to use the right virus checker software, I found Ewido to be the best then run part 2 of the RESOLUTION making sure you reboot immediately you complete fixing the registry entries.
