Hi Jim,

I think you need to provide one login while installing SQL 2008 which will have sysadmin privilege in SQL Server 2008. Please refer the screenshot of Database Engine Configuration while installing SQL 2008 as shown below,
http://sql-articles.com/index.php?page=articles/SQL2008/ins_2008.html
If you click Add current user then the user who is installing SQL 2008 will become an admin in SQL..otherwise you can choose the account you wish to add there. Atleast one account should be present..

Hi Deepak,
I am having the same error, "Missing system administrator account. To continue, provide at least one Windows account to provision as a SQL Server system administrator." while installing "SQL Server 2008 Express with advanced services".
If I select Windows authentication it gives me the above error, and when I select the Mixed mode and enter a new password, it still gives me the same error.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got it resolved.
The GUI doesn't have expandable sign/icon on the right hand corner so I was not expecting it to expand, but I came across another forum with something similar and it mentioned about expanding the GUI, and lo....there it was where you can add the current user.....
Microsoft: Please don't deviate from the set standards by you. It just causes PAIN in the SPINE to get the installation and configuration done.
Thanks,

My goodness, thank you so much for finding this: how come Microsoft would have done such a big joke to its customers? I don't get it at all.

This is still an issue in sql server 2014. Installing sql server in vmware player in non-fullscreen mode caused me to duckduckgo the problem. Still, minor issue but mysterious! :-)
