share folder for students
Ok so i dont know where to start here.My goal is to have all 400 students have an individual folder with lets say a 5GB cap on each, then i want them to be able to retreve the files over the web from a web browser. Is this possable and what do i need to begin.I was thinking my setup would be to have 2 external esata 1TB drives that connect to the computer, patition them into 2 (so each 4 grades have a patition) then split it out evenly. I will run server 2008 unless the software needs 2003.

You can make use of the FSRM role in Windows Server 2008 to define the storage quotas for your users. Publish the users folders through FTP in IIS and assign the requisite permission(s). Regards, Salvador Manaois III MCITP | Enterprise/Server Admin Bytes & Badz :http://badzmanaois.blogspot.com

Here's a detailed how-to for this: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/307/using-fsrm-folder-quotas-with-ftpRegards,Salvador Manaois III MCSE MCSA CEH MCITP | Enterprise/Server Admin Bytes & Badz : http://badzmanaois.blogspot.com

Well before i let you go, i dont know how to make that script. and how i would use it even. I dont want this too bee to hard because we are not compleatly sure if we want this or not. Also i just heard yesterday about roming profiles. Would this be for us or do we still need to create all the files.Let me go into detail about our site to help out and get your opinion on what you would do. We run a high school with 400 students (100 per grade)We have about 35 destop computers and 25 mobile laptops. All students get a AD account to login to. We do not allow them to use there own computer to conect to the domin but we do provide free wireless to all the students which does not require a login. We restrict a lot of what they can and cant do (cant change wallpaper, cant run commands etc.) Also we dont have any file server so any files they do use must be e-mailed to them selves or saved on a flash drive. That is mainly our config. If you have a different idea of how we can allow students a file share please tell your opinion. Like i said i am still new into the file shareing world. Also thanks for helping, sorry i have been asking so much

Good that you described your infrastructure; at least, we can think of solutions best catered for your needs. I believe implementing user profiles would be good for your environment. One of the benefits of roaming profiles is that the students have the same look-and-feel of their desktop whichever domain computer they log on to; any change on the profile (files copied, for example) and preferences gets uploaded back to the server and this ensures resource and data availability anywhere on the network. You can define a roaming profile size of 5 GB for each of the students. If you find that the data, for example, in the My Documents folder under the user's profile get larger in time, you can pair up Folder Redirection with the Roaming Profiles for an even more streamlined solution against profile bloating. This is a much simpler solution compared to publishing your students files/folders through WebDAV. No need to install additional components (like IIS, for example) and managing this implementation should be a lot less taxing than going to the IIS/WebDAV route.Hope this helps.Regards,Salvador Manaois III MCITP | Enterprise/Server Admin Bytes & Badz :http://badzmanaois.blogspot.com
