setting up ptr record
Hello, For needed records to add, that depends of how you want to use them: If you want them for local resolution then it will be enough to add them on your local DNS servers If you want them for public resolution then contact your ISP Technical Support. If you have a public DNS server and your clients are using it then you can add wanted DNS records on it For Exchange questions, it will be better to ask them here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserver This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Hello We are thinking of setting up our own mail server, where do I set up the ptr record: request ISP to make an entry to their dns server (we will subscribe a fix ip) or set it in our own dns server? Many thanks in advance Richard

Hello 1. It depends. If you have small network, ask you ISP for maintaining the DNS (Primary and secondary is needed with a SOA,A+PTR and MX records.) 2. If you want your own DNS, set the primary with forward and backward lookup zones, assign A record and PTR record for this A record, MX record. Let the secondary DNS in the ISP system. Whenever you need to change anything in DNS, the change is transferred in secondary DNS. 3. My recommended reading is from Cricket Liu and Paul Albitz http://books.google.com/books?id=HggtWI1ShvMC&printsec=frontcover&hl=cs&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false Regards Milos

Many thanks to Mr X and Milos for taking time to help. I think I need it for public resolution as the emails sent are not able to reach their destination. richard
