server name change issues
We had to change the name of our server so we took it out of active directory (forced a dcpromo) and put it back in as a different server name. We added in the old name pointing back to the same IP address as we have/had but when I go to the workstations, the don't resolve that old name to the IP address. The only way that I've found that it will is to add in an entry to the hosts file on all the workstations. Pinging the old name from the server resolved properly. We've restarted the DNS, and then restarted the server and still no go. We run a Windows 2003 Server and AD but we have a VPN tunnel connecting back to our head office which is connected to about 25 other servers. We feel that the problem is local. There are other issues such as replication and DS issues but I want to start with this problem first. We have an application that was installed using the old server name and we were told that if we put in that DNS entry in the server, it would resolve that issue. What should I be looking at?

Hi, Thank you for the post. The server you changed the name is DC and DNS server? Please post the server and one client "ipconfig /all" and "nslookup oldservername" results. RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

Hey all, thanks for the links. We fixed the problem today. We dcpromo'd it out of AD, renamed the server back to the original name and put it back into the domain. All is good now. Event logs are clean and replication is instantaneous
