replace server by changing name
I am currently planning on upgrading a data server on our production network. I have been running the replacement server on a test network for a few weeks and am confident that it is ready to be moved to the production side. It already has the same name as the server it is replacing. I would like to turn off the old server, then turn on the new server in its place. My question is; What else would be necessary to do or is this even possible. I am prepared to update the DNS records but what about the SID? The new server is a day behind the old one, so a restore will also necessary once the new server is in place

What servers are you planning to replace? and what is your replacement plan? Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights. http://publications.sivarajan.com/

the computer object for the old server does have a sid associated with the name. what you can do is unjoin the old server from the domain. reset the computer object (deletes the sid). join the new server to the domain using the same name as the old server. as far as dns, i would delete all references to the old server after unjoining the old server from the domain and configure the new server to register in dns.
