redundant DHCP without clustering
Hi all I have 2 DC's operating on the network 1 server 2003 and 1 server 2008 The active diretory data has replicated over smoothly however for redundancy I would like to have the other DC take over if 1 DC blows up. I have copied the DHCP folder from 1 DC to the other and this contains the same scope information but without the dhcp reservations list. I have deauthorised this DHCP server as Im not sure about having 2 DC's with identical scopes on the same network/subnet. Clustering is beynd my knowledge and I done have the time to develop this while privding support to clients. My thoufghts are to have the identical scope on the second DC but deactivated until the other DC goes down but I will need the DHCP reservations as well so I wondering how to acheive this, I was hoping export & import would work but n joy Any one Thanksconfuseis

Hi, Split-Scope DHCP is the feature you are looking for. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757346(WS.10).aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/teamdhcp/archive/2007/06/15/how-to-use-split-scopes-in-dhcp-for-a-robust-deployment.aspx Regards,

Rather than having the same scopes set up on the second DHCP server, the recommended approach is to have two DHCP servers, both active, but using the split-scope approach. One DHCP server has 50% of the available addresses in its scope, while the other DHCP server holds the other 50% of the available addresses. Both DHCP servers are online at the same time. Of course reservations need to be created on both servers. Here is a high level summary: Load Balancing DHCP Using Split Scopes Hope that helps.. IT Knowledge Base | itgeared.com |

I see. This looks like what I was asking for thanks, The IP subnet thing confused me so please let me know if im correct below I have a standard 192.168.x.y subnet so I would have the 2 Dhcp servers and configure 2 scopes. Each DHCP server having 50% of the available addresses So DHCP server 1 could have scope adrdress range 1 - 100 and DHCP server 2 would have scope address range 101 - 200 If 1 DHCP server takes a nose dive then clients get their IP's automatically from the 2nd dhcp server? am I right? Thanks Confuseis confuseis

Yes that it right. This even will let you avoid conflicts between the DHCP servers. Note here that if the DHCP server is down and you have this configuration, the second DHCP server will be able to serve only 100 clients.
